Why do Marxists resist being called Marxists?

Against my better judgment, and for the entertainment of my approximate 25 Twitter Followers, I got into an argument with some moron on there who told me that “China wasn’t Communist, and Ilhan Omar wasn’t socialist.” This complete idiot told me that I only referred to Rep ISIS as a socialist, because I didn’t like her.
What the actual frick? I don’t understand why people who advocate for socialism, think it’s some kind of pejorative to be called a socialist. These morons just put the word “Democratic” in front of Socialist and somehow think that means it’s not totalitarianism. There are elections in freaking Venezuela.
I think socialism is a ridiculously bad and dangerous idea bc it’s a fast track to totalitarianism. But it’s just a political theory. Not a racial epithet.
And also the other thing that puts a bee in my bonnet is when dumbass leftists say that socialism isn’t Marxism. Uh. Yes it is. It’s a form of it. It’s sort of like there are shades of purple- that range from Lavender to Aubergine (that’s “Eggplant color” for you straight guys). What the actual hell is the difference btwn Marxism and socialism. Socialist is just a specific striation or Marxist.
TLDR:
1) Does anyone know why actual socialists think it’s an insult to be called a socialist?
2) Does anyone know why actual socialists think socialism isn’t a form of Marxism?
Maybe God. Leftists are just stupid.

My guess is the libs you speak of have a deep intellectual understanding of Marx and Marxism that no conservative could ever understand
I had a friend tell me the bartender crowd weren't marxists. I'm not really sure what a marxist is either if they aren't labeled that way. Any philosophy that pins people against each other by race or class is a marxist IMO but that apparently isn't technically correct to the "intellectual" crowd.

Socialist and Communist revolutions and their governments are responsible for more death, poverty, and misery than any other cause combined for the last century.

Jesus, the idiocy never ends on this board.

Let’s stay focused on the issue.
What is the definition of Marxism?
How is it distinguishable from Socialism?
Why do Marxists and/or Socialists think it’s an insult to be identified as socialists and Marxists? (esp. If they think it’s such a fabulous and honorable ideal).

Well, western leftists don't seem to really subscribe to Marxist thoughts as much as they do redistribution. I think in common parlance, Socialism is used more to mean state intervention in consumption markets. Taxing production or collectivizing the product and then redistributing it socially.
On the other hand, Marxism has much less to do with redistribution or seizure of consumable goods, but rather a dismantling of private ownership of capital.
Socialism is associated with high taxes and high levels of social spending/redistribution. Marxism doesn't really need high taxes from the capital-owning class bc the capital-owning class wouldn't be making profit. The wealth that gets socially distributed or consumed would come from seizing capital, not seizing commodities. Taking the means rather than the fruits.
So, in short, socialism is typically used to refer to seizing production, and marxism seizing the means of production. These are distinct concepts, even if they have similar elements, so it makes sense we use 2 different words for them, even if you despise both.

Socialism is a buzz word to oversimplify economic systems that fail.

Unlike AOC and Tlaib, Omar won’t even call herself a democratic socialist. I’ve see her call herself a capitalist before, which is hilarious.

Wouldn't you say that the marxist philosophy is entirely rooted in materialism and classism? That was the point I was trying to make. It doesn't matter how the distribution of resources is achieved in modern government (we have explicit institutions from preventing socialism), the fact that a politician believes that working people are being oppresed by coprate overlords and thus we should be taxing them to death instead of seizing their property doesn't matter. Not to mention that capital and entrepeneurship are two of the means of production that get maniuplated by government to fit their political desires.

Chris Matthews once asked former DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz to explain the difference between a dimocrat and a socialist. The question stumped her.
What’s the difference between a dimocratix and a socialist?
