When we had control of the house and the senate? I’m just a dumb kid. Someone please enlighten me.

People will tell you that you need 60 votes, but the truth is they never tried.

For the same reason they couldn't do "repeal and replace".

They didn’t have control of the Senate. They didn’t have 60 votes. That doesn’t mean they couldn’t get anything done but it meant they had to compromise. Cocaine Mitch had more important things in his mind to use his political equity on. He kept telling Trump next time. That’s really it.

McConnell was not willing to change Senate rules for a budget bill & we never had 60 votes to break a filibuster to get it through the Senate

Mitch screwed up on this one

I get that they didn't have 60 votes but why wait until now to even try to negotiate?

I can't disagree with this

Mitch deserves the most scorn here

I think it is also fair to say that enough Repubs didn't want to & Mitch essentially gave them cover

Senate doesn’t like to bring things up if they don’t have the votes. Repubs are lazy as shite...

Debatable

When one considers that Republicans have only Twice in the last 100 years held both chambers of congress and the Presidency, it is not a risk they are willing to take. Opening it up so that Democrats can ram legislation through Congress unabated for decades with a simple majority vote is too scary to imagine.

The flip side of the coin is that are nation, at least as I've known it, is crumbling.
We are headed to a breakup.

This nation will breakup in to multiple countries within the next 40 years.

I agree, but I also do not harbor any illusion that this favor will be returned in today's toxic environment

I have been wrong before & the Senate is where "cooler heads" are supposed to prevail

Dems went nuclear 1st on judicial appointments & Repubs returned the favor (admittedly, with higher stakes)

I will be shocked if the Dems sit on their hands and don't raise the stakes again if Repubs are holding up a bill they really want

process rules

Needed 60 votes in senate.

There were a few republicans who do not vote in.lockstep with Donald. Two retired.
Still 2 left. Alaska and Maine. So 60 was not possible without horse trading.
Donald did not offer any sweeteners to buy the votes of democrats.

For example: there was no attempt to pass an infrastructure spending bill.

There was no offer of citizenship for daca people.

Never even a whisper of real plan to deal with millions here on expired visas.

DACA in exchange for 25 billion in Wall funding was voted down by GOP. I believe it had 45 Democrats. When Wall funding was voted on as only item it recurved 39 Republicans votes.
