The original tweet by a NYT writer:

Then the predictable replies:

quote:

I feel Great™? knowing that a dude @ the NYT believes that if you’re black or brown or from an urban area, then you’re not REALLY from the Midwest or REALLY from Texas or REALLY from the deep south. Only rural/white people live there + shape the culture and economy of the state!

quote:

Wow. Hey @jonathanweisman any particular reason you decided to single out two Black representatives and one brown Palestinian representative? In case you haven’t realized, the Midwest and Deep South also have large communities of color. Don’t be racist, dude.

quote:

imagine thinking “the Deep South” and NOT thinking of black civil rights leaders

quote:

Muslims and Jews and Hindus and Buddhists are in the Deep South. Black and Brown people are in the Deep South. Openly-LGBTQ people are in the Deep South. Badass reproductive activists are in the Deep South. Contrary to what some may think, the Deep South is our home, too.

quote:

I love the inclusion of Lloyd Doggett in a transparent attempt by NYT’s deputy Washington editor to head off accusations of racism. Regardless, this is still very racist

Also just did google maps and Atlanta is 300+ miles from the nearest southern coastline. But you know, facts and shite don’t tell the whole story.

New York Times writer claimed Atlanta wasn’t in the Deep South.

Apparently that means he’s racist.

I don’t get it either.

Is that exactly what he's doing, though? I can't even begin to figure out his convolutions here.

You can't I've in a district that is more than 99% percent urban and claim to represent the real concerns of the Deep South or Midwest

I don't think he is saying that. I think he is saying that Lewis isn't a Southerner and Tlaib isn't a Midwesterner.

At least that is what I'm getting from his tweet.

Do New Yorkers not see black people from the South as "Southerners"?

Wait, wut? Miami is on a "southern coastline". It's not the deep south.

Atlanta is

Politically speaking, it isn't. Atlanta, and most of the metro, are blue.

The point is the culture is not Deep South culture but that’s completely lost on them.

New Orleans is majority black and has a Deep South culture.
So does Memphis

Some people are clearly upset about something, which obviously means some white people need to be called racist about it.
