re: What's the point of this attack on Syrian Airfield?

The American and Russian governments will both talk this shite up and pretend that they are escalating the conflict. Then they will save the whole fricking world by agreeing on a tremendous deal. That deal will include the US removing sanctions on Russia, in return for Russia leaning on Assad to not use chemical weapons on his own people. Nobel Peace Prize for Trump and Putin for averting nuclear armageddon.
Winners: Trump, Putin, Exxon
Losers: Syria, America
**Not my words BTW, just found it to be an interesting angle**

What's the point of this attack on Syrian Airfield?
To deter Assad from murdering innocent civilians.
This government doesn't give two fricks about its own people, and now I'm supposed to believe we're going halfway around the globe to police the world and help those folks?
How is it even possible that you people could be this naive?

I Agree. Yet you're stupid enough to compare Assad's use of sarin nerve gas against his own people to the US using a herbicide for jungle foliage 40 years ago.

To prevent horrors similar to what happened the last time we whiffed on punishing Syria for chemical weapons.
Emboldening Putin to wreak havoc in Syria and Crimea.
Emboldening Assad to take out the Free Syrian Army so the only viable opposition left would be ISIS, which we can't support.
Creating a refugee wave into Europe.
Creating a refugee wave including a terrorist who participated in the Paris attacks.
Possibly pushing Brexit over the top in Britain, where there had always been sovereignty concerns regarding the European Union but where withdrawal seemed unlikely.

quote:I disagree. It's doing exactly what it was intended to do.
It had no substantive or strategic value.
9/11 was pulled off as an excuse to invade and control the Middle East, which included regime change. Getting into Syria is the last piece of the puzzle. But getting the American Sheople behind an invasion there has been a difficult task. Too much time has passed to use 9/11 as an excuse, like it was for Afghanistan and Iraq.
So ISIS was created and even that didn't seem to do the trick.
This is just another phase of propaganda to get us into Syria and remove Assad (which was part of tthe agenda since 9/11).
It's the same script used to oust Saddam. This isn't the end, it's just the beginning.

Like when you said all during the campaign that Trump was handpicked by "them" to run against Hillary because he was the only Republican candidate she could beat. And "they" picked Hillary to win.
It's that kind of special insight that is your gift to us.

So we are the judge and jury on all this?
Per the agreement signed....yes, we are. Us and Russia both. The Russians failed to provide oversight. We did not fail to act.

Proportional retribution and specific deterrence. It's supposed to give the Syrian regime a moment of pause before they next choose to flout international law. Assad may be a hard case, though.
Still don't think it was him. But, the "response" was good.

The more I'm reading, the more obvious this was a lot about the show. Closely coordinated with the Russians. Russian advanced air defense not employed. Runways not damaged. Personnel evacuated. Statement this was a one-off.

Eyewitness says Syrian military anticipated U.S. raid
By HAIDER NEWMANI ALEX HOSENBALL
Apr 7, 2017, 12:02 AM ET
Syrian military officials appeared to anticipate Thursday night's raid on Syria's Shayrat air base, evacuating personnel and moving equipment ahead of the strike, according to an eyewitness.
Dozens of Tomahawk missiles struck the air base near Homs, damaging runways, towers and traffic control buildings, a local resident and human rights activist living near the air base told ABC News via an interpreter.
U.S. officials believe the plane that dropped chemical weapons on civilians in Idlib Province on Tuesday, which according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights killed 86 people, took off from the Shayrat airbase.
The attack lasted approximately 35 minutes and its impact was felt across the city, shaking houses and sending those inside them fleeing from their windows. Both of the air base's major runways were struck by missiles, and some of its 40 fortified bunkers were also damaged.
Local residents say the Russian military had used the air base in early 2016 but have since withdrawn their officers . . .

Trump backed himself into a corner with his line comments and felt he had to do something.
