What's the deal with assault rifles?

I am not a gun person at all. I do not own any currently I like to shoot pistols sometimes at the gun range with friends(I dont fool with any guns bigger than that) So, please excuse my ignorance. After yet another mass school shooting, there has been a big hoopla on assault rifles.
This is not a troll thread at all. Someone please educate me on the matter, because I really don't know. From my very novice understanding, these assault rifles are basically military-grade weapons. They are much more dangerous than your standard, say, 9 mil or revolver. Yet, they are very easy for any civilian to buy and use. So much so, these weapons have been the weapons of choice for the monsters at Parkland, Vegas, Sandy Hook, Texas Church, etc.
Is any of this is true? If so, why are these weapons not being banned? What is the argument for allowing weapons of mass destruction in the hands of normal citizens? Or is everything I posted earlier a fallacy. I am truly interested in learning the big deal on not having gun control and whats true or not.

Handguns kill far, far more folks than rifles "assault" or otherwise.

No more easy than any other firearm.

The equivalent of one of these shootings occurs every week, 10 days, fortnight in Chicago with handguns. Also, I should point out that firearms are HEAVILY regulated in Chicago, effectively disarming the law-abiding/innocent, while the criminal is free to operate as he always has - outside the law.

“Assault weapons” are no different than any other rifle. Shoots the same ammo, at the same rate of fire. The difference is the cosmetics and ergonomics.

None of this is "true" insofar as that word has any meaning remaining in the public discourse in 2018.

Nope. There’s only 800 threads on this from the last 5 days.

As a former military officer I can tell you that this is an outright lie. That statement is as about as true as saying a Berretta 92F/S is a “military grade weapon.

Once again this is MSM bunk. Just about any rifle is “much more dangerous” than any pistol.

Wow where the hell did you get that propaganda from

In a word....YES!

People are being murdered at an alarming rate in the inner cities by handguns but crickets by the MSM.

So is your pistol that you see no problem with owning.

Virginia Tech massacre was committed by one guy with a 9 mm pistol and 10 round magazines. He killed 32.

No easier than any handgun you mentioned.
Here's the real deal on gun control. None of it addresses crime. Let me give you some background. Back 1986 the NRA had spent 5 years trying to get the Firearms Owner Protection Act passed and in doing so, the democrats attached 922 (O) known as the Hughes amendment which banned new production of fully automatic weapons. See full auto, short barreled shotguns and rifles, suppressor and a category called "any other weapon" are legal so long as you get approval from the ATF. At this point we never had a registered full auto weapon used in a crime yet they were banned. We did get treated to watching 2 psychos with fully automatic weapons wreck havoc in Los Angeles though.
Fast forward to the 90s and we had a 10 year ban on new magazines past 10 rounds and features in semi auto firearms. Nothing changed. Matter off fact one proponent of the bans lapse was law enforcement who found the ban was useless. Rifles are rarely used and one cam see that in the FBI Uniform Crime Report. Typically 300 up to 400 a year. Shotguns usually close to rifle but handguns are a different story.
If you banned and confiscated every "assault weapon", you won't see a difference in crime plus the gun control advocates will just move on to another class they don't like.
I think instead of banning the number one rifle platform in the country we should spend our energy focusing on other areas like why the FBI failed to do their job.

I can agree with this. I know taking away guns wont fix the problem. I was just wondering if it could help with the problem in any way.
