I caught the tail end of the news yesterday and saw that they're looking like an arts cut is inevitable.

Was their mishandling of funds? Are they finally realizing that they won't be "the #1 school district" in LA?

They're spending more than they take in. School board is putting a 1 cent sales tax increase on the ballot for a March election.

ETA:
quote:

A legislative audit shows the district spent nearly $4 million more than it made in the last school year, dipping into its fund balance to cover the gap.

It's why the system is asking voters to back a one cent sales tax in March which could keep the district flush with cash and keep pink slips out of teachers' hands.

Well, that'll pass in that community -- no problem. White flight still leaves room for a penny.

At least its a consumption tax and not a property tax increase. Smart move.

They've already increased school property taxes by 75% so they probably believe it might be a harder sell to ask for more even though a 1% increase in sales taxes will mean Zachary will have a 10% sales tax rate which would be the highest rate in EBR Parish.

Zachary residents can just drive to the Wal-Mart in Baker rather than shop at the one in Zachary.

Are they having problems with their school budgets? Since we have moved to Texas, I like have the smaller ISD model. It seems more efficient and most property taxes go to the ISD. I know that not everything is roses here, but cost of living and school system(s) seem better overall.

Frankly, when was the last time any public school system told voters it was collecting more taxes than it needed?

I understand that. I meant are they going over budget on projects or are they paying their administration too much and it is effecting their bottom line? This is more of a general question as to why the TX ISD model seems to work better in TX than LA. How is the Central (1996 graduate here) school system doing compared to Zachary?

Pretty close. I am told that Zachary has too many separate campuses. Only a couple grades per. Don't know if that is true though.

However, I can say that Central is right there as far as test scores go. And the recently built school for elementary is very very nice from the outside, haven't been in.

This seems to be a problem for more than just Zachary. The EBRPSS has the same problem.
quote:

The school system’s latest projection, released earlier this month, is that it will spend nearly $29 million more than it takes in during the 2014-15 fiscal year unless it makes cuts.

The people of Zachary will get to decide whether, or not, they want to maintain the same level of spending by paying increased taxes. People within the boundaries of EBRPSS will not be offered that choice. They will just see a decline in spending at EBRPSS schools for everything except meal programs.

Right..wouldn't it now be 11% in the Americana retail district if this passes? Yikes.

Why do you crave making the EBR school system look bad in a thread about the Zachary school system by linking a story that's over a half year old and which has already been addressed by the EBR school board? Are you really that pathetic in your negativity?

I'm not familiar with the taxing sub-districts in Zachary.

I just looked up the sales tax rate for Zachary and it is currently 9%.

Central's move to consolidate multiple elementary schools to a single local in each grade is not a good one IMO. There's some pros because with bigger classes you can more accurately segregate them into tiers so that the best students are in classes with other good students.

However, Central has roughly the same land area as the city of Baton Rouge so they have to cover a lot of ground. Granted that is common in rural areas but the population of central is large enough to support two schools in each grade.

Zachary on the other hand is less than half the population and about 1/3rd the land area of Central. They need a single centrally located complex IMO.

There are a large number of campuses but they are full of students from what I have seen, at least in the lower grades.

They track the kids through each school a grade or two at a time rather than having X number of elementary schools covering multiple grades for different parts of town and then feeding into larger middle schools and high schools.

About 10 years ago, funding problems were so bad that it looked like Pointe Coupee Parish Schools were going to have to shut down two elementary schools and one high school. I doubt Zachary (or anyone in SoLa except maybe St. Helena) is having a problem as big as that.

That's an interesting model, especially considering the impressive facilities Zachary schools have. It also seems to be a great defense against desegregation lawsuits.

Either way, Zachary has a reputable school system. Hope they can get their funding straightened out.

Y'all are right. Makes sense then. Anywho, this mirrors a lot about the federal government.

They spend too much money and then crawl back to the taxpayers asking for more money. Cut yalls spending.
