What's going on with Zachary and the school funds?

I caught the tail end of the news yesterday and saw that they're looking like an arts cut is inevitable.
Was their mishandling of funds? Are they finally realizing that they won't be "the #1 school district" in LA?

They're spending more than they take in. School board is putting a 1 cent sales tax increase on the ballot for a March election.

Well, that'll pass in that community -- no problem. White flight still leaves room for a penny.

Are they having problems with their school budgets? Since we have moved to Texas, I like have the smaller ISD model. It seems more efficient and most property taxes go to the ISD. I know that not everything is roses here, but cost of living and school system(s) seem better overall.

I understand that. I meant are they going over budget on projects or are they paying their administration too much and it is effecting their bottom line? This is more of a general question as to why the TX ISD model seems to work better in TX than LA. How is the Central (1996 graduate here) school system doing compared to Zachary?

Pretty close. I am told that Zachary has too many separate campuses. Only a couple grades per. Don't know if that is true though.
However, I can say that Central is right there as far as test scores go. And the recently built school for elementary is very very nice from the outside, haven't been in.

Why do you crave making the EBR school system look bad in a thread about the Zachary school system by linking a story that's over a half year old and which has already been addressed by the EBR school board? Are you really that pathetic in your negativity?

I just looked up the sales tax rate for Zachary and it is currently 9%.

Central's move to consolidate multiple elementary schools to a single local in each grade is not a good one IMO. There's some pros because with bigger classes you can more accurately segregate them into tiers so that the best students are in classes with other good students.
However, Central has roughly the same land area as the city of Baton Rouge so they have to cover a lot of ground. Granted that is common in rural areas but the population of central is large enough to support two schools in each grade.
Zachary on the other hand is less than half the population and about 1/3rd the land area of Central. They need a single centrally located complex IMO.

There are a large number of campuses but they are full of students from what I have seen, at least in the lower grades.
They track the kids through each school a grade or two at a time rather than having X number of elementary schools covering multiple grades for different parts of town and then feeding into larger middle schools and high schools.

About 10 years ago, funding problems were so bad that it looked like Pointe Coupee Parish Schools were going to have to shut down two elementary schools and one high school. I doubt Zachary (or anyone in SoLa except maybe St. Helena) is having a problem as big as that.

That's an interesting model, especially considering the impressive facilities Zachary schools have. It also seems to be a great defense against desegregation lawsuits.
Either way, Zachary has a reputable school system. Hope they can get their funding straightened out.
