What was supposed to be the end-game on having a perpetually anonymous "whistleblower"?

This is what I don't understand. What is the scenario people were envisioning whereby this guy's identity was never going to be revealed, yet his startling spell-bounding information was going to bring down the President of the United States.

I could never figure out how exactly that was going to work in reality.

I am still waiting to see where the whistleblower protection act, or any other internal IC regulations guarantees said whistleblower anonymity.

They simply do not have a plan. They never expected POTUS to release the transcript of the call. They have no idea whether to shite or go blind.

The state of the present day Democratic Party.

This is a riff on their, "Not the evidence, but the seriousness of the allegation" play they like to try against Republicans.

A. He's not a whistleblower, and

2. His identity will quickly allow his biases and motivation to be transparent.

So, they hoped to simmer that over the October/November timeframe and build public opinion against Trump and for impeachment.

It isn't working.

The whistleblower blower protection act doesn’t protect the identity of the person, it only protects them from professional retaliation.

And that’s assuming it’s a good faith claim

If the witness is never produced then his story is both iron clad and ever changing to create the facts needed on demand.

THAT is something that I find extraordinary - the "WB" report is anti-factual - should be outed and prosecuted .
