You used a very interesting term, and I suspect you are correct. You said "squatters".
It seems like areas that are essentially bus stations are very liberal. A large portion of folks who end up there emigrated there for work or school or social programs or a "vibe", like Portland, Northern Virginia, Southern California, even Austin. Areas where more families have roots across generations appear to be more conservative.
