Three US elections since the Nixon/Kennedy debates took place with no debate between the Democrat an Republican nominees. Of those three, which do you think would have been the most interesting or been able to effect any part of the election? (2 where blow outs)

1964 Senator Barry Goldwater vs President Lyndon Johnson

1968 Vice President Hubert Humphrey vs Richard Nixon

1972 President Richard Nixon vs Senator George McGovern

2016 - The one where Clinton wasn't fed the questions beforehand.

Trump vs. Obama

The amount of shite talking would've been hilarious.

Obama has too many rehearsed answers. Bernie wouldn't give a frick about that like Trump doesn't. That would have been the best debate ever.

It would require a DeLorean, but I'd like to see a debate between Senator Obama and President Obama.

This one. When the candidates are as far apart as they were in '64 or '72, debates tend to be pointless. When candidates have a lot of overlapping similarities, then debates can be useful in clarifying certain contrasts.

By the way, those 1976 debates between Ford and Carter were probably some of the most boringly civil in U.S. presidential campaigning history.

May have been able to close the gap - Goldwater wasn't the lunatic he was portrayed to be by LBJ. Probably wouldn't have changed the outcome.

Interesting, but you would have had to have Wallace in there, too, I think. This is a relative blow out, too - if forced to vote for either Humphrey or Nixon, most Wallace voters would have held their nose and gone with Nixon - it's a complex issue. Humphrey was pretty wonkish - not as much as Stephenson from a decade before, but pretty bookish/wonkish. America craves alpha leadership.

McGovern was about as far left as we had leading a major party's ticket until 2008 (yes, including 1984) - debates wouldn't have changed that. 1972 was still 1972.

He didn't run, but Biden vs Trump would've been the greatest debate ever.
