re: What makes evangelicals Republican?
quote:

Freedom of speech protects speech about homosexuality. Freedom to marry whomever is not included under the category of free speech.

Right over your head...

The same mental gymnastics that allows "Love your neighbor as yourself" to promote freedom of speech could also be used to advocate for gay marriage.

The common sense approach is that the Bible doesn't promote free speech, if it did it wouldn't have taken Christians the better part of 2,000 years to figure it out.

"First, you get to deny the messy stakes of loving the born and bodied—those with melanin in their skin, different kinds of hair, genderqueer expressions, immigrant parents, and non-Christian faiths. Second, you get to deny the messiness of the social contract—of the political realm and all its irreducible details and multiple voices.

You are absolved of responsibility for the brown skin of Dreamers, the unwashed hair of refugees, the cry of bullied trans teenagers, the mourning songs from families of black men and women killed by police. Myopic and unwavering focus on abortion is the way to avoid the carnality of living, breathing beings. The way to get away from bodies."

See that’s the thing about Christianity, we can forgive. But the person in question must first demonstrate that they’ve repented. Trump has messed up, a lot. Hell he used to be a democrat. Both things have changed. You and the policies you advocate not only abandon morals, they openly make out those who do acknowledge them as being hateful or bigoted.

What on earth are you talking about? You seem to be taking this "I've studied the Bible and can now take it apart" approach to something you have knowledge of but not wisdom about. You know what the Bible says, apparently, as in you know the words that are in there, but you have no idea what they mean and how to practically apply them.

That freedom of speech isn't advocated for in the Bible.

I'm not looking for answers in general, either. In general I already know the answers.

No you don’t; no one does.
We’re all students until we take our final breath.
From where does your arrogance come, anyway?
Open your mind a little.

That would depend. How is freedom defined in the Bible? What is freedom?

I don't see how either of those questions matters with regards to whether or not the Bible advocates for what our Bill of Rights labels "freedom of speech". It either does, or it doesn't.

Whether that's really "freedom" and whether or not the Bible defines it as such is irrelevant.

We have a concept, freedom of speech, and the Bible either advocates for it or it doesn't. I don't care if the Bible calls it by a different name, forget labels and definitions. Is there a similar concept within the Bible?

You asked the question specifically about freedom of speech... I answered... Your response was not to address my argument but bring in a new argument (well what about gay marriage)... If you want to engage in a logical discussion then I am game.

As far as your other argument, you need to read what the Bible says on homosexuality. The number of people in our culture who will hate the absolute morality found in the Bible will continue to grow.

Either way we are all sinners in need of God's grace. Christians are not perfect people.

Actually my response was addressing your argument.

I assumed what you said was true, and showed you that it would lead to other consequences that you wouldn't agree to - thus showing that its wrong. You can disagree that what I said actually showed your initial claim to be wrong, but to suggest that it didn't address your argument?

Have you ever heard of the phrase "For the sake of argument"? How I responded is common practice, the fact that you didn't catch it shows that so far this whole conversation has been over your head.

Azkiger, it could logically follow that freedom of speech is distantly rooted in the Christian idea of love your neighbor and Christians could act contrary to that idea. It wouldn't violate the central premise if a Christian acts against that command. Follow?
