Former hacker group infiltrated by the FBI
Posted on 5/31/20 at 12:39 pm to TimeOutdoors
Used to be legit hackers with an activist bent. Ever since becoming famous everybody wants to dress up and pretend they’re l33t hactivists too even if they don't know how to even tell the world hello.. Since there’s no membership card or anything anybody can claim to be Anonymous

Anonymous originally were anarchistic hackers who really hated child pornography. Generally, as long as you left them alone, they left you alone. They mobilized when they wanted. Not your personal army was a common refrain when people sought them out as if they were a modern day A-Team.

Important to remember though that that it’s more of a movement than anything. If you want to be a member of Anonymous simply say you are and you’d be correct.

"Anonymous" today has many meanings, it originally comes from 4chan, everyone on 4chan (an imageboard) is "Anonymous".
Later "Anonymous" became a movement against Scientology and other groups. Then came hacktivists ( lulzsec antisec) as a part of this movement...

About
Anonymous is an ad-hoc group of Internet users who are often associated with various hacktivist operations, including protests against Internet censorship, Scientology and government corruption.
History
Users of the anonymous image board 4chan, launched in late 2003, began using the term "Anonymous" when referring to themselves as a collective. User registration is not required on the site and users who do not identify themselves are given the label "Anonymous." In 2004, a 4chan administration manipulated the site to force every user to be displayed as "Anonymous," which perpetuated the notion that users of the site was part of an anonymous group.

Anonymous has been dead since like 2012. Anyone claiming to be anonymous since then are just cosplaying dorks

Basically Anonymous was a group of activists from 4Chan. They tended to take down things that aggravated them with little rhyme or reason.
Then it kinda died out is seems to just be resurrected by groups for a little attention/clout for their purposes.
I'd say the closest we've seen to classic Anonymous recently was the trolling of Shia and his flag.

Mexican cartel whacked key leadership and it neutralized them

I doubt that.
They were told that the Zetas kidnapped a member. So, Barrett Brown, saying he represented Anonymous, said that they were going to expose them.
People pointed out that the cartels were not like governments, and there were questions raised as to who exactly was kidnapped (they couldn't find out who it was/if they actually existed), and it all basically fell apart.
