It’s an election that happens before the normal time an election is supposed to occur.

When someone leaves office early (resigns or dies usually) the office staying vacant till the next normal election date isn't really fair to the people of that jurisdiction, so they hold a non-regularly scheduled election to pick somebody to fill out the term of the person who left the office.

Also does this mean he’s elected until November? If so what’s the point? That’s only 90 days

His term is until January when the winner of the November election is sworn in.

Considering what's on the House plate between now and then and the current makeup of the House, this is a giant nothing burger.

Mostly true.

It does give whoever wins a minor "incumbent" advantage in November.

Undecideds often just vote for the incumbent by default (they are listed on the ballot as such), which is part of why it's harder to unseat an incumbent.

We had one in Alabama because the Jeff Sessions appointment left a Senate Seat open.
