What if we taxed the half of the population that pays nothing?

Just a little bit.

How much revenue would that generate?

Not much

A national sales tax is by far the most fair tax. Everybody pays their fair share.

Rich people that buy lots of shite pay lots more taxes.

Next to nothing. I'd prefer that more people's tax liability essentially be zero, though the EITC does need to get the frick out.

Yes but it impacts a significantly smaller portion of their income.

It would be fairer only if essentials were not subject to sales tax.

How about just not give them any money to begin with?

If you want to decrease something, tax it.

We could win the war on poverty by taxing poor people.

How much revenue over time do you think would be generated if you tax us 70%?

I’m not following, whose “us” in this instance and 70% of what - ordinary income?

He is placing himself in the highest percentile, I imagine.

Taxing anyone at 70% is going be counterproductive because people will change behaviors. Any accountant worth their salt will move the money to a place where less than 70% liability must be paid to the guberment.

The FairTax has a prebate mechanism to address this.

Their proposal doesn't even meet their goals. They think they're taking wealth and redistributing it, but what they're doing is slowing the growth of new wealth.

I’d trade them 70% tax on those making 20 million or more in ordinary income for something I really wanted like National ID Cards or the Wall

They are so blood thirsty you give them a mirage and make out like a bandit.

Next time someone advocates going back to the 90% tax brackets of the late 50s - early 60s, remind them that people who earned $0 to $2000 annually were taxed at 20%.

A Truly "Progressive" Federal Income Tax System, circa 1960
