s, but I always thought that they were fighting the good fight and defending the constitution.
That was their propaganda tagline so they could get away with murder on the liberal front and nobody would complain.
They were always fighting their biggest battle - the perception that they were an extreme left-wing organization so they constantly picked little right-wing battles to say to their critics - see we're for everyone's rights.

With the recent news of the ACLU wavering on both 1st and 2nd amendment rights they really don't serve any purpose.
That would be like Ruth's Chris going vegan

I don't think they ever fought for 2A rights very hard.
They definitely fight harder for liberal leaning causes.
I personally think prayer in school is a bad thing (officially, not individually) but I think the ACLU went too far and got very petty on some borderline cases.
That created a lot of ill-will among conservatives, who might otherwise support them on many issues.

The biggest sign that the ACLU was left wing was that they continually refused to defend 2nd amendment rights and gun freedom despite calling itself an organization dedicated to protecting american civil liberties.
If you're going to call yourself that, you need to protect every right enshrined in the constitution.
I don't consider the ACLU any more legitimate than the SPLC which is quite frankly nothing at all.

Just like todays RINOs. They vote conservative on the little, mostly meaningless issues, but on the ones that really matter, they obstruct.

Like Methodists, Episcopalians, and Pope Francis, they don't really believe what they are supposed to believe.
