I believe that gumbo is an African word meaning “everything in the pot.”

What we think of as gumbo is also adopted from French Cuisine, ie the roux, and essentially Americanized by Cajuns and black people who borrowed from each other. If you put tomatoes in it and call it gumbo you’re a fricking idiot and should be chastised and banned from polite society, and you definitely do not have permission to use the word gumbo.

Black people don’t own the word “gumbo” or the American dish “gumbo” anymore than white French Acadians. My Cajun French white grandmother who had Cajun french as her first language - told me it was gumbo and taught me how to make it properly. Calling something with tomatoes in it gumbo is a slur. Otherwise, I’m so confused by why it’s somehow racist that a word has been adopted into the English language recognizing the contributions of white French people and black people to American cuisine and culture and I hate everything
