I am so glad I was raised in a time before having a sore arse about everything and seeking out some variation of victimhood was encouraged if not admired as it is today.

Ya know how much the world is going to be changed for the better by these sniveling, thin skinned assholes getting these flags taken down? None.

Character is in short supply in 2014.

He was one of a dozen or so cases not included in the General Amnesty and was required to submit a special application/Oath. For whatever reason, he was not pardoned for over 100 years. There is speculation that it was intentionally or inadvertently lost or misplaced.

So he was convicted of treason?

Was Nixon convicted of any crime against the United States? Was OJ convicted of murder? Lee's case is far clearer than either of those.

By signing the Oath of Amnesty he was all but admitting to it, btw.

If Lee was truly guilty of treason and was thought of as a traitor, I can't understand how the US Navy would name a nuclear sub after him

He was.

Apparently he wasn't/isn't universally thought of as a traitor--as evidenced by this thread.

I have no ill will toward the man, but I can't really understand it either. I don't think he contributed anything to the US Navy. Hell, the biggest head-scratcher in recent memory has to be the Cesar Chavez, and even he served in the Navy for a couple of years.

Here's the deal. I understand the sentiment you bring, but you're letting your heart think, and your head beat. Do you honestly feel so much animus toward RELee?

I agree that the Virginia state flag would be most appropriate. Lee didnt want Virginia to succeed from the Union and wanted everyone to be loyal to the Union after the War. He applied for amnesty after the War but didnt get it approved. The USA flag would be more appropriate than the traitor flag of the CSA. The CSA lost and some people still have sore asses because they lost to the USA! USA USA USA

I also think people need to gtfover it. The secession is how many decades ago now?

At the same time, if the guy was a Virginian, it seems that would be an appropriate flag for him.

Just more BS in the ridiculous world that we live in but thanks to the Neo-Nazis and KKK many have taken the Stars and Bars as a racist symbol. Complete Balderdash.

Precisely. My family COULD be very offended by that image, but they laugh about it and disregard idiots. Mature people don't let petty shite bother them.

I'm thinking with my head and I don't feel ANY animus toward General Lee. On the contrary, I think you're letting your affinity for him blind you to the simple fact that he swore allegiance to one country (as a military officer), and later took up arms against that country in defense of one of its constituent parts--fighting an ultimately foolhardy and ignoble cause. I understand that the concept of a "United States" vices several united States, was not universally accepted at the time--especially in the South.

I honestly don't see how that changes anything, though. Confederate forces started the war after losing a properly contested national election. He went on to lead those forces.

What would you call that?

Is Dishonesty Now A Part Of Being An Officer?

I'm just asking out of curiosity, because it was not part of being an officer when I served.

he "swore allegiance to one country as a military officer, and later (when that country took up arms against his own homeland, Lee FORMALLY resigned his commission to the former, and PUBLICLY proclaimed allegiance to his homeland, then he) took up arms against that country in defense of one of its previously constituent parts""

Who are they to decide what is on a man, (who fought for something he believed in), the right to take something from his tomb. Is this really what the world is comeing to!
