Turns out it was a mirage effect that caused it. Refracted light due to huge drop in temp around iceberg water.

Titanic sank because she was going full speed through an ice field on a moonless night.
Turns out the ship's officers had no idea how fast she -would- stop or how quickly she -could- be turned. Her sea trials didn't cover any of that.
