An announcement could come as soon as Tuesday, according to two people briefed on the matter. This is the latest sign that growing tensions between the United States and other countries will not end soon.

Farm groups have complained that Trump’s tariffs on foreign imports have led other countries to retaliate with tariffs on U.S. products, jeopardizing farmers’ overseas sales of soybeans and other crops.

Under the White House plan, the money will be disbursed in at least three ways, coming through direct assistance, a food purchase and distribution program, and a trade promotion program.

This will satisfy IB Freedom. Subsidies will keep consumer prices low...his/her biggest beef.

$12 billion is a drop in the bucket compared to the hundreds of billions we get ripped off every year by other countries.

All indications are agriculture products prices would fall with the tariffs, since our supply of ag products would exceed demand, thus causing prices to fall. Thus this aid package.

trade wars are usually measured in years. Maybe with the internet and the acute pain caused by this, it will be over quicker.

BS---this is typical deep state crap. Throw money at the powerful lobby and screw the rest of us.

Now not only is Trump raising prices for all of us with his tariffs he is taking our money and subsidizing a special interest he hurt with tariffs.

This is BS.

Where are you Trumpsters that have been telling me to suck up the tariffs we have coming????

You going to stand with Trump and let him spend our money taking care of important constituents??

This is backfiring "hugely" for Trump. It will cost the republicans the House in the Mid Terms.

We produce more than we consume. Our agricultural policies in general are quite bizarre. We pay farmers to destroy crops after all.

Other countries have trade barriers that stop us from benefiting from our productivity and efficiency.

If we can get those trade barriers down we can export all our surpluses.

Ag is so incredibly subsidized to begin with. It's really hard to tell what an additional $12 billion will do combined with tariffs. This just sounds like a move by the administration to quell some objections while they try to accomplish larger trade goals.

One of the interesting things about the history of farm related tariffs are the strategic element of not being dependent on another nation for a source of food.

I can regurgitate ricardo and friedman international economic theories and make a text book case against tariffs until my face turns blue, however, that doesn't mean I see it as so black and white. More importantly, neither did they.

This is not a surprise to anyone who knows the slightest thing about economics theory or practice. Expect this to change, pivot and manifest itself several times over.

You can quack about it and pretend to be an armchair expert on the matter or you can observe and educate yourself...who am I kidding. Feel free to keep quacking.

Question for Brian, how do you think "trade wars", or more accurately, trade negotiations work?

I'm genuinely curious how little you know. Please share.

America has been an agriculture exporter for generations. We have far more arable land than most countries in the world. Furthermore, we subsidize crops for export - soybeans and corn - for instance. And then we protect domestic industries that are not competitive - sugar for instance.

Our agriculture policies are seriously broken.

That what the subsidies are for.
