Sure, assuming it's your personal flavor of "highest and best." When it isn't, you whine about it.

It’s not “my” personal flavor. It’s the flavor of Judeo-Christian ethics which stretches across time. You can pretend we sprang from a moral swamp ex nihilo. I will engage in no such flight of fancy.

I don't think that's what you're after. I think the goal is to debate my position - which you don't like - without having to reveal your ideology in any depth. I don't know why that is.

What I meant is that I don't think anything genuinely resembling "small government conservatism" has been put into practice. What that promised movement became has lost ground on every major issue, save perhaps the Second Amendment.

This... "I'd settle for "small government conservative" to be more than a talking point." ...is what I said. That doesn't mean I box myself into a singular idea.

No one is accusing you of boxing yourself in with ideas. Quite the contrary.

It’s much easier to attack positions than defend them.

And for the record I don't really care about tying him to a position so I can bludgeon him with it. But it's pretty counterproductive to have any discussion while the ground is constantly shifting.

Yes it is. Others enjoying the same flavor doesn't change that.

You’re just destroying language to pretend to make a point.

Correct, I'm not a fan of authoritarianism just because I happen to agree with it in a particular instance.

That doesn't necessitate an in-depth examination of my entire ideology.

No one who advocates for what you proposed is a "small government conservative." If that's fine with you, cool. We can move on.

Of course not, but it's still something many profess, while simultaneously longing for the government to step in on their behalf.

I already made my point.

Now I'm simply destroying attempts to extrapolate from that.

I'm not a small government conservative in any meaningful way.

I favor small government as a stopgap/alternative.

But, as to 808's point, I do consider myself very conservative.

A lot of folks do, even if that isn't absolute.

To be sure, that isn't realistic or expected. Some are able to be self-aware enough that they allow some nuance. Some are not, and that's where we get some of these dope arse purity tests.
