(Updates paragraphs 5, 10-14 with more background, comment from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler)
WASHINGTON, April 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General William Barr declared on Friday that the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is facing emergency conditions due to the fast-spreading coronavirus, paving the way for the agency to begin releasing more inmates out of custody and into home confinement.
Barr said under his emergency order, priority for releasing vulnerable inmates into home confinement should be given first to those housed in federal prisons that have been hardest hit by COVID-19, including facilities such as Oakdale in Louisiana, Elkton in Ohio and Danbury in Connecticut.
Barr's order comes after five inmates at FCI Oakdale 1 and two at FCI Elkton 1 died from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus.
The BOP said Friday that 91 inmates and 50 of its staff throughout its 122 institutions have fallen ill with COVID-19. Union officials and families of prisoners have told Reuters they believe the number of people sickened with the virus is much higher.
Earlier this week, the BOP took the unprecedented step of ordering all of its facilities to place inmates into a 14-day quarantine by confining them to their cells or living quarters.

I get why this is happening. But it begs the question: If it's safe to release these guys to their homes... should they really be in prison in the first place?

Community service is much more effective than prison for probably 70% of all prisoners. Most haven't done anything to hurt anyone except taxpayers. But unlike Politicians, they are sent to jail instead of becoming wealthy.
When they do join a prison, they get the choice of joining a gang or being hardened. Generally, the terms are too long and once you get out you're never the same. Also since the sentence is long, your son or daughter grows up without a proper upbringing which "pays it forward" to the next generation of deviants. Thanks! Then, after you affect multiple generations, the tax payers gets to pay $25,000/year to house/feed/allow someone to be raped because they cheated on their taxes for $6,000..or "done hard drugs.. muh body my choice" amirite?
It's all nonsense and archaic for the most part. (for the most part because some definitely need to be there)

Good. We over-incarcerate anyway. Shame it takes a pandemic to get some non-violent offenders out of cages

Why the f, can't they just keep them Quarantined in the cells? Seems a hell of a lot easier, faster, more effective and not as dangerous to the general public.

A lot of people sitting in jail right now are non violent offenders who refused to plea guilty, can’t afford bail, and are stuck in jail awaiting trial. It’s such a messed up system

So if it is so rampant in prison why are we releasing them to sicken the public. Most of the prisoners are black. Most of the blacks were raised by their grandmothers. Great idea to send them to house confinement with grandma Pookie.
