I never understood discriminating against entire schools. If an applicant proves their competence during an interview, why does it matter where they graduated from?

Because hiring is ALWAYS fraught with a possibility of hiring a dunderhead. Not all dunderheads are obvious in the interview process.

So, hiring authorities WISELY use any and all factors that might tend to reduce the odds of hiring a dunderhead. This is why personal recommendation is always popular. People complain about the "who you know" factor. But, the same dynamic is at play. If someone I trust says, "Joey is awesome", then, that's one more factor that helps me reduce my odds of a wasted hire.

Well. Having met MANY graduates of HBCUs and worked with them, I can tell you WITHOUT QUESTION, that using HBCUs as a reverse indicator is justified on steroids.

And so candidates will have to go to graduate school, to prove themselves.

Because college is now just a meaningless participation trophy.

They'll never eliminate the MCAT, GRE, LSAT,GMAT at least

This is arguably net backwards for equity.

Exactly.

While one can argue that tests aren't perfect, they are BY FAR better than subjective measures.

What's funny is, subjectivity is precisely what the left would NOT have wanted in admissions 40 years ago...…….and now, they're begging for it.

Didn’t some universities drop the requirements for the grad school exams in order to gain entry?

From what I've seen of admitting people who are less than qualified into advanced or gifted programs, there is no self-esteem in being the dumbest kids in the class.

Let's just keep devaluing a college education.

As an example, not engineering but Math. A comparison of the B.S. Math curriculums at a local NOLA HBCU to several southeastern state colleges will show that the highest level of math taught at the HBCU is first semester junior year work at state universities.

Gotcha. I assumed that the curriculums would be largely the same.

That’s fair. Maybe I was thinking too much of my own field where it’s pretty easy to tell if a candidate can code or not.

I think I work in a similar field.

We have had problems where the person can talk a good game in the interview but, as soon as we put them in front of the terminal, they are so incompetent they can shut the whole system down by accident.

The main problems we have, IMHO, are that the protracted hiring process and questionable pay mean we aren’t getting high quality candidates for every opening. Sometimes you get ones who can learn. And sometimes you get ones who need to be shown the door immediately.

They are an elite public university system and can make their own choices. They are still going to admit high quality students. But I do not see this being able to work for lesser university systems. ETA so many downvotes but no actual substantive responses. Sorry I triggered you snowflakes

How will they know which students are high quality? Grades are nothing more than social credit scores in California. The breed of liberal that judges work by its merit is, unfortunately, a dying breed. I recently left my PhD program for this reason. Logic itself is being demonized, not put on par, but put below emotive “reasoning.”
The useful idiots are going along with it because they believe the tests are racist. The slightly higher up venal administrators are pushing it because they were using Chinese/International student scores (often obtained by cheating) to hide the true caliber of many political admits. Most parents will go along out of narcissism (inability to cope with offspring being judged average). 1 in 7 UCSD students is from China. Add in other major countries in the student population and that’s not a lot of room for taxpayer children of merit.
How can the gifted/talented rise above biased teachers and show their gifts? It’s especially poor timing considering how many high-functioning autistic students, and extremely high IQ bored students, struggle with day to day assignments but blow the SAT out the water.

UC whatever is worth more on a diploma than Chico State.

For me, that depends on major, GPA and whether the student worked a job.

Yep, and it’s obvious. That’s why I left. I was actually asked to write simpler- in a PhD program.

Will you please say more about this if you have time? I have very high test scores and made As in stats, but I always found the underlying logic dubious. Am I not alone?

Eliminating the SAT or ACT will render GPA king for admissions. So now a kid going to a magnet/honors school will be at a disadvantage for taking harder classes then one going to a local school that is easy.

Well, you do have the issue of minimum MCAT scores in med schools. Some races need much higher scores to be competitive, others much lower.

The drop out rate for the lower score groups is much higher though.

Do you think all HBCUs are on the same level? What specifically are you referring to? Every field or the one you are in?

don’t all the students take the same test?

This is California?

They need to be free and clear to screw Asians to make sure they let in the below par minorities and rich legacy kids.

Keep voting democrat Asians!!!

If you apply yourself like you do to your schoolwork you can become the minority most screwed over by the democrats!

There will be THOUSANDS of Asians who will not get into UC because of this each year. You can study all you want, does not matter.

I don't give a shite if they crowd out white kids, the white kids need to work harder but fat chance of that.
