Neil Young never figured that out but he could write songs. I can only think of one Springstein song I liked. Don't know anything about Mellencamp.

As far as songwriting, I like Mellencamp better than both of the above.

You don't think you know anything about Mellencamp, but I assure you that you do.

My theory is that in order to write/play/sing with passion about something euphoric, you have to live in that fantasy land in your mind. That's why they are liberal nutjobs, because they live in a fantasy land, but that fantasy land is also what gives us all those great songs.

You may be right. I suspect all 3 are just raisin cane to stay relevent (although I know both Young and Springstein have always had a political bent. Hell, Young is from Canada. He could always go back to that communist country but he owns a ranch in Wyoming or somewhere.

Springsteen and Mellencamp are irrelevant in their own career field. Why would anybody listen to what they say regarding a different field? It would be like listening to Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis talk politics in the 1990s.

That is incorrect. Mtv absolutely droves tastes for roughly a decade.

I will say this though: someone was playing me some examples of rap last night that they found compelling. I was struck by how little has changed in 40 years.

While I'm sure that's true, it's also true of rock.

Popular music IMO stopped really evolving and started folding back on itself and recycling in the early 90s.

There were still some original sounding rock bands in the 90s, but as the decade went on there were fewer and fewer, and also the bands that emerged that were still original sounding were also less and less compelling.

A lot of Grunge was basically recycled punk, for example.

Country just became pop with a cowboy hat starting in the early 90s.

Why would you care what any musician has to say?

People like Bruce Springsteen, John Cougar Mellencamp,

These two are cheeserock! They even sucked in their prime.
