Democrat voters would rather vote Democrat if they can. Presently, after Biden's terrible debate performance many Democrat voters may now view Biden as not a viable candidate.
If Biden/Harris are switched, imagine the new energy and hype that could be pushed by the MSM.
I think you underestimate the possibility.
If they can make the lemmings on the left believe that Joetato was a competent leader for this long, they’ll have no problem convincing them that Whitmer or Newsom is the next Churchill.
