The media covers the celebrities' attacks like they're news. Responding to the media's coverage is part of setting the narrative. If the media gave Streep's speech the appropriate level of coverage (none), the President wouldn't address it.
Those Hollywood "holier than thou" screeds happen at every single awards show. Literally every. Single. One.
And they usually aren't covered to the degree Streep's was, because we have never had a President who would take a huge, heaping mouthful of a bite at the bait.
Now the media knows that anytime someone speaks poorly about Trump, he's going to respond. So of course they're going to push it. He fuels the fire by jumping on any perceived slight with an astounding level of consistency.
Look at the first time he attacked SNL several months ago. There was very little commentary on Alec Baldwin's portrayal until Trump decided to call out the show with one of his sophomoric tweets. SNL is now having its best season, in terms of ratings, in 24 years.
It writes itself practically.

Obama shouldn't have used "pop off" in his verbiage. But outside that, he said that if other people felt that they had better strategy/policy for the given situation, he'd want to hear it and debate it. Sure he was sarcastic. But none-the-less.
Are you kidding?
Apparently you haven't heard all of Oduma's insulting personal comments about Trump.

Trump, on the other hand, whined that someone called him something he didn't like, and in doing so insulted that person and resorted to name calling. As he seems to have to do whenever anybody speaks poorly about him.
Meh, it isn't just "calling him something he didn't like" or someone speaking "poorly about him".
It's about someone attacking Trump with personal insults about his character that aren't true especially when it's a Hollywood actress who is a Hillary lackey and a sore loser using an awards ceremony as a bully pulpit.

That's not why it's covered. It's covered because the media feels the same way as Streep.

This is a pretty major reach. Say what you will about the politics but Streep is a legend.

Attacking someone's reputation with personal insults that are not true in an attempt to disparage the person in the eyes of the public is NOT a "perceived slight" and should be dealt with immediately.

"Oduma." Nice.
That said, could you link me to some of the statements Obama has made that you feel are even somewhat comparable to the tirades that Trump goes on via his Twitter feed? Legitimate question, because nothing I've seen of Obama's seems comparable in tone or maturity level.

Ah I see. So if only Obama would have spent more of his large amounts of free time while in office to defend himself on Twitter from those public figures and celebrities (like Trump, come to think of it) who called him "Kenyan" or "Muslim" or questioned the veracity of his up bringing, or called him a "Manchurian Candidate", or said that he would usher in "1,000 years of darkness" if he were elected, then he'd have your respect.
I'm sure.

Just trying to keep this straight here.

The media only cares about eyeballs. Getting as many to the screen as possible.
Having a POTUS tweet such foolishness is unprecedented. As President, he should be above this. Who will he name WH Press Secretary? It may be an easy job? He fricking tweets whatever he is thinking. The press sec can just say "read his Twitter" to all questions.
I keep waiting for him to stop and for someone in his inner circle to tone him down. He WON!!! Stop running for President. Stop campaigning.

Anyone else find it ironic that Trump/far righties melt over Hollywood elites using their platform to criticize what they disagree with?
As in, it's ok for the far righties and Trump to use their platform to bash the media, the liberals in hollywood, etc. But it's not ok for the hollywood crowd to do the same?

Trump is a political figure running for office/holding office. People understand that it's his job to have political discourse. Hollywood is none of those things.
I do think that celebs should use their platform to speak out against any civil wrong, but they should be 100% certain about what they're saying and know all the facts

People like Streep are baiting Trump and he jumps in the trap every time. It's just a game to these people now but Trump can't help himself. He'll garner much more respect by not acting like he's in the booger flicking olympics.

I wonder when Trump will get this?
I HOPE it shuts down after he is in office! I HOPE he shocks the world and does a great job.
I HOPE the Pacific is as blue as it is in my dreams......... I hope.

What Trump did was bring even more attention to what would otherwise be just another political speech by a Hollywood actor/actress. The media loves to scrutinize and even poke Trump. He confirms their beliefs of a thin-skinned president with his tweets. The end result will be even more of the same. It's all over the news. Had he learned to ignore criticisms, which come with the territory, the speech would be out of the news in a flash.

Yep, what a leader.
If by leader you mean a thin-skinned 12 year old girl.
I we all survive to watch you lemmings eat your crow.
So anyone who responses to criticism is "Thin Skined?"
You better rush off to your safe space if you expect to survive the next 4 years.
