Neither of us are trained in mental health, but looking at every other example I can think of, the consensus of thought seems to be that it is better for the patient to confront and overcome delusions rather than for everyone else to pretend that those delusions are true.

Thats not even remotely what's happening. Forcing everyone else around that person to play make believe about their mental illness is the problem. Saying things like, it shouldn't be that hard to just call them what they want to be called- Let them play the sports - It's no big deal is not just letting them be comfortable. It's forcing everyone else to be uncomfortable and placating your mental illness which is why society is puking it up. People are sick of the bullshyt.
