When they released the letter, the FBI also let it be known that they were working on the scratched off serial number on the SKS and that they had determined all but one of the digits.(WSJ 9/24/24.) Now, I’m no math genius, but it seems to me that narrows it down to set of 10 weapons they could trace with ease. Not that it means anything.

It reminds me of Lee Harvey going over to the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. This is after he told embassy personnel that he planned to divulge all of his knowledge about US RADAR systems.
Then he comes back a year or 2 later and just sets up shop like nothing happened.
