In 2016, I was a Ted vote. Trump won the primary, I crossed my fingers and voted for him, and was pleasantly surprise that he governed conservative.
In 2024, I will be a Donald vote. If Ron wins, I will cross my fingers, and vote for Ron. I have more faith that Ron will govern conservative than I did for DJT. I hope I will not be unpleasantly surprised.
Every syllable of what you wrote describes me precisely.
I make no bones about it - except that I became a more devout Trump supporter after watching him in office. And I am now sad that my 2016 primary vibes are reawakening.

No, I'd actually be pretty pissed if Trump ran as an independent

I would guess the scenario would have to be examined.
Let's take Evan McMullin. Runs for President in 2016. Now prior to 2016, McMullin was a Republican, but ran as an Independent against Donald Trump.
A former CIA Agent and former Republican, enters the 2016 race as an Independent. Now who was that meant to benefit? Hillary Clinton. She was also behind Jill Stein as well.
And still lost to Donald Trump.
In Conclusion: It would depend on how someone other than Donald Trump wins the nomination. If it's straight up, Donald wouldn't go 3rd party. But if it's due to some deep state bullshite? He would.

Your question is why Desantis should wait.
There is a certain % of Trump supporters for whom only Trump will do.
If he won the nomination he would sill lose the war. I don't believe Trump would run 3P if he lost nomination. But regardless of whether he did- there are millions of OnlyTrumpers out there who will stay home. The Rs need Trump to win. The R establishment is more interested in maintaining control of its useless fricking party than winning elections.
See: abandoned and sabatoged Am1st candidates in 2022 Midterms, and total lack of support and more sabotage (cough Kemp/Doocey) in 2020.
I like Desantis. For the good of the country- I hope he and Trump kiss and make up and he waits to run until next time.
