But others are disturbing, like the fact that in Washington, D.C., between 2018 and 2022, only 1.7% of people arrested for carrying a pistol without a license were sentenced to prison. This dismal record comes from the District of Columbia Sentencing Commission, which analyzed arrest and sentencing trends in the District’s Superior Court for carrying a pistol without a license. Before unpacking how and why only 97 of the 5,558 adult arrests that contained at least one charge for carrying a firearm without a license ended up in prison, let’s step back and look at the bigger picture in the nation’s capital—the astronomical homicide rate—and connect the dots between that rate and guns. According to the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, firearms are used in approximately 77% of all homicides in Washington, D.C. Knives come in a distant second place at 14%. National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform figures show that 95.8% of homicide suspects in the District are male, and 96.8% of those are Black. Over 70% of suspects are between 18 and 34 years old. To look at the victim numbers, 89% are male, of whom 94.1% are Black. Over 62% of homicide victims are between 18 and 34 years old.

Crime was down last year in DC.
And on pace to be lower this year.

Trump is hinting that he wants to use the National Guard to stop the crime in DC and secure the Capitol.
This comes at the same time that he is investigating the Deep State cabal and a grand jury is being impaneled.
What if those two things are connected?
If Trump is actually going to follow through on high-profile arrests, he is going to need control of DC. He will need complete security to pull off arrests, military presence would give him the ability to mask movement of high-profile targets, and he will need the National Guard in place preemptively to shut down any riots or uprisings, because the public will likely be outraged if certain high-profile individuals are arrested.
If there is going to be a “corruption purge” here in the US, similar to the one in Saudi Arabia in 2017, Trump taking federal/military control over DC would be necessary.
Food for thought.

I know the left is going to interpret these statements as authoritarian regardless, but D.C. is a unique situation in that it’s already a federal entity under the jurisdiction of Congress, who have delegated certain authority to a mayor and city council under limited home rule legislation. “Federalizing” D.C. would simply mean firing the local authorities for cause and restoring administrative duties to Congress as opposed to outsourcing them. Would it be a break with historical precedent? Yes. But unconstitutional? No.

what was crazy about the tweet? Be specific
quote:DC government sucks, but POTUS just does not have such “powers” pursuant to the Home Rule Act of 1973. Basically, he can unilaterally deploy the Guard and not much more.
I am going to exert my powers and FEDERALIZE this city
It would be up to Congress to take Home Rule back and thus “federalize” the District.
