“Every death is a horror, but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people that died, and you look at what happened here and what is your death count? Sixteen people, versus in the thousands? You can be very proud. Sixteen versus literally thousands of people.”

That death toll number could rise considerably the next time it is updated.

it's funny how people call Obama a communist. last time i checked this was America not Russia. can i get a list of communist laws he passed while president? I remember when this board would loose it shite over the way he bowed to low or didn't give the proper solute to a Marine. Trump spends his weekends making a 8yr old on twitter look like mental giant and this board eats it up.

Well yeah... 16 people vs. thousands. Like in his quote. Which you failed to include.
So because one had a far greater loss of life, the other one is not a "real" tragedy? Are all other mass murders or terrorist attacks not "real tragedies" because many more people died during the 9/11 attacks?

And besides the ridiculousness of that, that good does it do to fell the people that something else was a "real tragedy" as if a person who just has their house destroyed will somehow say, "no big deal since it's not a real tragedy."

There is a big distinction between an inability to "empathize" and/ or "communicate the empathy" but with a desire to do so, and whatever Trump does.

Obama maybe, but Hillary is a corporatist Democrat. She's under no definition a communist.

It's a racist dog whistle, man.

They wanna call him other things, but can't.

What does empathy have to do with leading the military you fricking idiot?
Well it's definitely part of being a leader in general, but why wouldn't empathy be a component of leading the military? Gladwell has a whole section in one of his books about a general who pretty much alone was able to outwit a team with some advanced communication systems in a war game. And why was that possible, because he could put himself in the decision making of the other side, and what they would expect him to do, and do something fundamentally different.

Now in this thread, we are actually talking a our showing sympathy and compassion, and empathy is essentially a necessary but insufficient condition of that.

None of you believe this man is REALLY some uncaring monster, but that does not stop you from trying to make him look like one. You have no shame and the REAL shame is you put party ahead of everything else.

He is complimenting PR for their forward actions of evacuations and what not.
I can get behind praising then for taking actions to minimize the immediate causalites from the storm, but then it doesn't make sense to then say, because you minimized the casualties, it's not a "real tragedy" like Katrina.

And what if they took the same precautions, and the storm was even stronger, with higher winds, heavier rain, and it a longer duration. If hundreds more died, would they have done a worse job preparing?

It reminds me of that stupid study that tried to argue that the masculinity and femininity of a storm impacted how people respond so more people die as a result. Or maybe there are a ton of things outside of our control.

Uncaring? No. But I think he weighs his caring for less on the people and to the situation, and more on how it positively or negatively it impacts him, to a disturbingly disproportionate level.

And putting a politician ahead of everything else doesn't somehow make it better because it's not an entire party.

Exactly. This board is thrilled about a guy they can barely say is better than the guy they think is the worst POTUS we've ever had. Why set the bar so low? Can you trumpkins give us one single quote from Trump that will be remembered throughout history like those from some of our greatest Presidents? Think JFK, Ike, Reagan, FDR, Lincoln, Washington, Adams, etc.
