You’re doing exactly way you’re supposed to do. When the market makes an adjustment that isn’t in your favor, diversify. In your case, you purchase tractors , dry vans, reefers and straights.

The intermodal and drayage is what is exploding in Memphis right now. Too many containers and not enough drivers who can pull from the rails.

Good luck with that load today.

yeah, these food warehouses we go to are going to have to step up their game. They can't be keeping these drivers in the docks for 5 hours anymore

See, there is an answer. When companies see the demand they will add more trucks.

Wait, that adds demand to manufacturing, too.

It's working

I'm talking to the same 4 people and I'm not paying 6$ a mile. frickkkk that

I was thinking about going to memphis today anyways (before this thread )... been a while since I had some good ole bbq. Is Central still a good spot? Haven't been there in a couple of years, but I prefer that over rendezvous bbq if you can believe it

You aren't charging a fee after 1-2 hours of sitting?

Seems to me,the problem is with The Lumpers. The warehouses want to use those services, because Of workman Comp claims?
The Company guy at the warehouse, can't complain to the Lumpers, because it's out of his hands.

If it starts to cost their company more money to have lumpers though, they will start putting their own people on the docks.

The fact that it’s Saturday doesn’t do you any favors pricing wise.

Forget Central.

BBQ Shop on Madison has the best ribs. Best sampler platter in Memphis as well.

Yes we do, but I also look at it from the carriers perspective. They only are allotted so much time to drive, so if the consignee or shipper holds them long enough where the can't get another load or simply won't be able to make a scheduled delivery they are losing money. I'll get charged in most instances for "reschedule or late fee" and then, as bad as it sounds, I mostly pass it off on the driver because the customer isn't going to want to pay that. But what if a driver sits so long where he can't even do another pick up for that day? He's missing on out X amount of money for the next load.

It's a vicious cycle and the ELD's are a pain.

Most of the time, the delay is on the delivery end.
The shipper is paying for the haul,so it's hard to collect.

fricking this

lumpers are a straight brother in law deal, drivers can't unload because of possibility of getting hurt.

Not only have I thought about buying a truck and trailer, I've also thought about opening a warehouse in Memphis to do lumper services

$50 a pallet to "restack", unloading of $300 per trailer... big money son

I Think we need to rethink the mandatory shutdown time. 10 hours is too much for most people. The split sleeper shite doesn't really help anybody.7 hours mandatory is probably enough. They can always sleep more if they really need it.Who sleeps for 10 hours?

I agree, it needs to be adjusted. This was an easy excuse to drive up prices

I have 3 road tractors, but no trailers anymore. We haul out for a local company that owns their own trailers. The loads are light(mostly just under 600 miles, and they usually unload fast.We find any back haul we can.
Lately, I have been getting up at 2am,to go get a loaded trailer every morning,to drop in a good location,to save drivers 1 hour time on their e-logs.

Elds are great. It levels the playing field somewhat. You can’t cheat as easy anymore. Hopefully it gets all these Russians and middle eastern people off the road instead of one driver acting as a team running for a couple days and takes out 7 or 8 car loads of people one night.

It's easy for a Team to cheat on logs. Every experienced driver, knows where there might be a problem.
You have 1 hard arse driver+ his wife. E-logs don't solve anything.

Make it all reasonable, and everything will fix itself.

Electronic logs(pretty much all regulations of any type) are pushed by the big companies,to drive the small guys out. Period.
That's the way things work.
