if he really wanted to go in this direction and had any sense, he wouldn't have unilaterally ended TTIP talks (and obviously, wouldn't have pulled out of TPP just to watch them go on without us)

that was the best chance at actually going this direction any time soon, easily better than this seat-of-his-pants stupidity he's trying now, particularly following his years of protectionist blather

he has taken us in the opposite direction instead, and pushed everyone else that way too

What are you talking about? We don't need the TPP to stay involved in trade with other countries. This trade renegotiation has been needed for a long time.

i'm talking years of established work on talks that would have resulted in lower tariffs and barriers in general, which was unambiguously more likely to work than this game of tariffs, threats of other tariffs, delays of tariffs, on-again off-again deadlines, and late-shifting positions (all unilateral, naturally) by a president who has a track record of pandering to protectionists

So we needed a massive trade agreement to guarantee true free trade?

Ok Mr. Omniscient...I am sure he is in way over his head and knows nothing as you allude to. So why don't you ride in on your white horse and save all of us neophytes with your knowledge?

protected industries do, and they tend to be awesome at lobbying

that's everywhere, not just in the US

this is not something we can just stomp our feet and achieve, it takes patience and years of agreements, and slow adjustment. and yes, compensation for the losers, which involves government help during the transition for affected workers

our recent trade deal attempts like TPP included all that, of course

i'm not exactly some voice in the wilderness screaming this, it's actually a very mainstream position with people who have been influential for a very long time

and no one can convince populist idiots of anything other than what they want to hear anyway. look at the fanatical loyalty that Trump and Bernie inspire on the fringes
