Getting dark at 5 PM during the winter sucks, and studies show it elevates depression and other issues.
Last year I made a point to get outside for at least an hour during the day, and it made a big difference for seasonal depression.
Personally, I think it’s a mistake to get rid of the current system, because getting ready and starting the day (driving to school and work, especially) in the dark is bad.
Will also make it much harder for anyone to exercise before work, as the body will not want to be up and working out two hours before daylight.
Ideally, society would adjust to the sun, and we wouldn’t need daylight savings time. People would naturally wake later and go to bed later, and businesses and schools would have a winter schedule.
TLDR, it would make more sense to change from an 8am to 9am start than to switch between standard and DST, but since that won’t happen, this is the best we can do. You just need to get your sunlight exposure during the day and not after work.

Just pick one and stay with it, don’t care which it is

I’ve always just said they should meet in the middle and since we are currently in DST just fall back 30 minutes this go round and call it a day and keep that time permanent

What do you gain by staying on standard time, the morning light?
Its really not a 50/50 issue, more 80/20, you gain w/ daylight which is healthy for the psyche and you cut the amount of electricity used by ma$$ive amounts. Going forward that would benefit the grid i would think .
GW. Bush pushed the time change out 2 weeks both ways just to save energy. Kind of a half arse way of appeasing the situation. The time change needs to end, its an antiquated system.

Railroad expansion along with telegraph and expanding Commerce is what drove standardization.
We don't need to go through that excersize again. Just imagine the chaos if neighboring states maintained differing hours.
It wasn't just that. You had towns that set their own time based off of Solar Noon. You could go from one town to another and the time would be off and you would have to adjust your watch in each town you went in. Time was kept locally and you could hear it in church bells or see it on display at a clock or jewerly store that sold clocks or watches.
That is why railroads pushed for standardization because imagine the chaos trying to tell people back then that the train from XYZ will arrive before it leaves because a town observes some crazy time different than the town you left.
Also once radio and TV became standard means of communcations, most rely on time scheduled programming to let people know when to tune in.
Imagine having to tell people to tune in at 7:23 pm for a show instead of 7:30 because your town is 7 minutes off.
