I could see releasing this statement as a negotiating tactic that accomplishes a few things. Z is being difficult to deal with.
1. Gives the appearance of Trump defending Zelensky
2. Also lets Z know the fact that U.S. and Russia discussed “new leadership in Ukraine” and let’s be honest that’s gonna make him sweat a bit. Just look at what happens to all the Middle East leaders when they don’t play ball.
