You just don't get it
You just don't understand what he meant
Do you really think he doesn't understand tariffs?

I export/imported goodness knows how many millions from dozens of countries.

Trump purposely placed the tariffs on goods whose pricing was non elastic. China eats the price or the importer changes sources.

If you are paying a higher price your importer (ie Walmart) is ripping your arse off and blaming it on the tariffs.

The exception is steel/aluminum, but if those industries operated in a fair/free market the price would never have been that low to begin with.

Maybe I’m being slow, but you’re gonna have to explain this one to me. Speak to me like I’m 5 years old. Because I don’t understand your premise that the cost of Chinese goods in the US should remain unchanged despite applicable higher tariffs.

Non elastic goods when it comes to pricing. Someone who is looking for a bargain on holiday lights. The buyer takes a look at his chinese supplier and says you give me a lower price so I can offset the tariff and give the consumer the same price OR I go to Vietnam, Burma, etc. And trust me those suppliers are already contacting the buyer.

So the US importer may "technically" pay the tariff, but it is with the chinese supplier's funds in the way of a lower price.

except the dollar value of imports from China has skyrocketed (while import tax revenue has also increased)

so the claim of either lower prices or a shift to different suppliers sort of doesn't make any sense at all

Come on proof, you know its relative, the value of the dollar has skyrocketed against currencies in all developing shitholes as well. In the aforementioned case, the buyer will take that into consideration when looking at the FOB or CIF pricing, FOREX is always a part of the equation.

a rising dollar would make a skyrocketing dollar value of imports even more contradictory to your argument, so

Trump: “China is paying us Billions in Tariffs”Posted by Spirit Of Aggieland ? on 1/4/19 at 6:19 pm

Today Trump said that China is paying us “Billions and Billions in tariffs”.

Tariffs are paid by US importers, the Chinese government pays nothing.

Can any of you explain what he meant by that?

Irl the tariffs are added to what USA consumers pay.

In theory, consumers turn to less expensive sources after the tariff added to cost makes product less competitive.
Irl, you just pay the tariff if you buy made in China on tariffed products.

Mexico is really paying for the wall too.

Yes he is a liar and a con man. Repeating big lies.

Perfect sense. Your argument about Chinese exports to US are not declining. Well the problem is they are declining because they are sending more.....at a lesser price. Look at all the headlines coming out of china where corporate profits are plummeting. What has changed on the imput side, power, nah, raw materials no, so it has to be on the output.....pricing.

yet even as a dollar gets you more, imports as measured in dollars are still skyrocketing

I am a Trump guy, but he said the following two things today which caused me to shake my head.

1. Apple has gone up 100’s of percent since he was elected. Really only 33%.
2. He said, “I am not talking about the economy, but ultimately the economy.” It just made me laugh.

This is what bugs me

Y’all on the left insist that tariffs are taxes on consumers because suppliers pass on tax cost to consumers in higher prices. That is true

Yet you guys turn around and insist minimum wage laws, corporate tax rates, regulations, etc are paid by businesses. Except consumers ALSO pay for these things in form of Lower wages and higher prices.

It makes me want to pull my hair out that you cannot see the similarly between a tariff and, say, minimum wage laws

You're surprised they talk out of both sides of their mouth?

The minimum wage increase is the one that really confuses me. What free market economist have been saying for years about minimum wage now has proof. People have lost jobs/hours because of the minimum wage hike all over.

I'm to the point that the left would seriously rather you be unemployed, than to make less than what their ideal minimum wage would be.
