As debate in the nation’s capital has focused on health care, Russia and secret tapes, President Donald Trump’s signature proposal — building a “big, beautiful wall” on America’s southern border — has faded from the spotlight.
But preparations are quietly moving forward to start the first wall-related construction on California soil in the next few months, in an effort to translate campaign rally applause lines into cold, hard concrete.
Construction is scheduled to begin on four to eight wall prototypes by “late summer,” Acting Border Patrol Chief Carla Provost said at a recent congressional hearing. They’ll each be 30 feet long and 18 to 30 feet high, and designed to withstand climbing, tunneling and attempts to break through.
The slices of wall will go up in a dusty patch of federal land on the edge of the San Diego sprawl, several hundred feet north of the border. The site, at the foothills of the Otay mountains and about two miles east of the warehouses of San Diego’s Otay Mesa neighborhood, is surrounded by scrubby grassland. Across the border are busy, poor Tijuana neighborhoods.

Can you imagine the protests with this? Should be insane. It will make entertaining television.

I love the fact it's taking place in California first. Indeed can't wait to watch the snowflakes melt.

Is there currently some kind of fence along the border or it it just open? Genuinely asking, I've never been there.

Unless they live on the border, they can hush up and find a better cause.

It's sad that you have to turn to Mercury News to learn about this. The MSM pretty much is ignoring the wall's progress.

I can't speak for the open land in Texas and Arizona, but this is the San Diego-Tijuana border fence

Any protesters who engage in violence should be given a choice, work on The Wall or go to Jail.

Not continuously. There are scattered small groupings of fences and walls, but nothing like what's been proposed.
I'm only familiar with the Texas border crossings, but I can't imagine they're much different in other states. Apart from the river, think of toll booths/plazas and bridges. We always just walk across the bridge and through the border crossing.

Wow.
That actually looks much different than the Texas crossings.
Here's Laredo

While I'm for the wall, instead of building one in California, let's just seize Baja California. There are only ~4 million Mexicans there, well within the margin-of-error of illegals already here. Think of the development that could occur - southern California extending another 1,000 miles.

Great idea, we can annex Baja California in lieu of payment for the Wall
