So places like Ochsner can pay more for their nurses

quote:Nonsense. They set the salary to keep the employee rather than going down to the street to a different hospital for $2.00 an hour. Salaries are not arbitrary and HR departments spend a good bit of their time doing salary surveys and comparing benefits and 401k plans, insurance and the like. Believe it or not, hospitals would like to have a good clinical workforce. Did you know that a Medicare patient is paid based on DRG for a certain diagnosis with certain modifiers? If a patient comes in with uncomplicated pneumonia and the DRG pays for 2 days (based on your cost report from prior years) and your incompetent staff gets the patient out in 5 days, your lose. Quality staff gets them out in 1 day, you win.
Company leadership.

She’ll start another thread in a year or so when the quality of care at UMC tanks and it’s time for her to whine about underprivileged communities lacking competent healthcare options

I think it’s hilarious how some think unions are good and that entry level positions deserve the same cut as CEOs.

Posted on 12/11/23 at 1:20 pm to momentoftruth87
According to her, she isn’t a nurse. She isn’t in a union and never has been in one, but she is convinced that unions are a net positive for the working class and nurses bring more value to a hospital than the CEO
She sho is dumb.

Unions frick the consumer, business, and product/service. frick unions.

And the parameters they use to determine whether they will be able to stay in business are often determined by......go ahead, you're almost there.....rhymes with "Parket Porces"...
E.g., Reimbursement per procedure is the same for the worst surgeons as it is for the country's best. In fact, as expensive corrective procedures often accompany the former, and reimbursement is set per encounter, the best surgeons, internists, etc are sometimes compensated less for care in our system.

You think unionization helps this?

Medical is so accessible that it’s ridiculous prices continue to rise for basic procedures. Cut out the kick backs and stop fricking those in need of help as well as professionals suggesting treatment that isn’t medically nescesarry.

None of that matters when these poor nurses can get paid a whole dollar more thanks to their union.
Posted on 12/11/23 at 1:52 pm to TigerOnTheMountain
Just more money in the pocket of the union when they get raises.
Posted on 12/11/23 at 2:19 pm to momentoftruth87
So avoid the union, don't give them raises, tell them they don't know how good they have it and that money would be better in the pockets of management to spend?
Can we agree that if you cannot afford to give raises to the nurses, then the people in management should not give themselves one either.

Its an awesome pyramid scheme. It really is.
Guys with GEDs rise up in the ranks and make 100k plus just working as a union fat cat.

I love all this white knighting for hospital administration, even going as far as calling people commies.
Yet, you are defending administrators, who not long ago did something that was actually very "communist" when they forced workers who mind you most had actual medical knowledge, into taking an experimental vaccine.
Do go on though, I'm sitting here for the show.

One reason I hate dealing with union personnel, they always feel victimized by their superiors.

Ahhh, yes, the always benevolent superiors are always doing what is right and just.

It always devolves down to jealousy and trying to outpace/outearn your peers. People hate seeing someone that they feel as inferior getting a raise and they aren't.
I stopped giving a frick about all of that a long time ago and just focus on my life, my family and my friends.
I hope all Americans regardless of union affiliation or nor, get compensated well for their work and skills.

If you guys want to discuss management and healthcare economics then go for it. This was about unions. Nobody is defending the fricked up system it is, most of us are still discussing the union aspect which is the OP.

I have always hated unions going back to my grandpa's experiences working at Olin/Winchester making brass back in the Depression prior to him being in WWII.
But big health care needs some screws put to it to keep it in check. Of all the employees I have ever seen, nurses working for mega-hospitals are forced to unionize because otherwise, they would be running 8-12 patients per nurse on ICU level floors. Trust me, it is a major issue.
ETA--medical professionals lose their license all of the time due to inadequate staffing.
