In a historical sense, the statement is true...but not like this demented freak believes.
Kids served multiple purposes historically: a) progeny (obviously); b) labor; and, c) caretaker (either for younger siblings should parents die young, or for elderly family members [or both]). Also, for a long period of US History, there wasn't compulsory public education (I am not here to discuss the merits [or lack thereof] of CPE).
With the rise of child labor laws, other than true family farms, that element was extinguished, as was the caretaker role (with improvement of general health/life expectancy). With the adoption of CPE, this created an insular bubble for children into their early teens that developed over time into the "innocence of youth" that we know today.
