Toyota Is Developing A Water Powered Car Engine

I've watched videos on this idea before, but Toyota's approach removes the need for stored hydrogen, which is much safer.
Much would have to be overcome before this becomes reality, but if any company can do it, Toyota can.
The oil industry and car industry will fight it, but I think eventually this is coming.

This video explores reports that Toyota is developing a groundbreaking water-powered engine that could serve as a sustainable, practical alternative to current electric vehicle (EV) technology (0:12-0:49).
Key takeaways from the video:
How it works (2:40-4:01): Instead of relying on heavy battery packs or high-pressure hydrogen tanks, this engine utilizes real-time electrolysis. By running an electrical current through distilled water stored in the vehicle, the system separates hydrogen and oxygen on-demand; the hydrogen is then burned as fuel in the combustion chamber.
Advantages over EVs (4:18-5:55): The technology aims to bypass common EV drawbacks such as reliance on rare earth metals (like lithium and cobalt), the environmental impact of battery mining, and the need for massive charging infrastructure. It is presented as a simpler, cleaner, and potentially more accessible solution for both developed and developing nations (6:09-7:26).
Performance and Safety (7:37-9:14): The engine design claims high energy density and efficiency, with the video citing early, non-Toyota prototypes that achieved competitive fuel economy. Because it uses water—a non-flammable substance—and generates hydrogen only as needed, it could theoretically be safer than systems storing large amounts of volatile fuel or battery energy.
Challenges ahead (9:15-11:08): Widespread adoption faces hurdles including public skepticism, the need for extensive field testing for durability, regulatory approval in a market built for traditional fuels, and the initial costs of engineering the electrolysis system.
The video concludes that if Toyota succeeds in bringing this technology to market, it could represent a massive shift in the automotive landscape, offering a bridge to a cleaner future through simple, abundant resources (12:04-13:15).

I remember playing with water powered rockets 50 years ago.

Wasnt there a guy back in the 90s that was in a National Geographic story about how he had made an engine that ran on water? He was found dead less than a year later

1 hundo.
I'm biased of course. Since the early 90's we have owned only Toyotas.
Outside of routine maintenance, I can count on one hand how many times we have had to take a Toyota to the shop since then.

Having that technology that Exxon (?) bought up rights to of something like 84 mpg 30 years ago and shelved could be helpful

No thanks, I'll keep my Tacoma and 4 Runner

I put more trust in American ingenuity. If it can be done, Elon will do it.

Don't they call that steam? I think we tried that a long time ago. Worked until something better came along (no I didn't read it).

I’m as American as anyone. But, the American car industry has historically not shown the ability to do much of anything right. Sorry, that is just historical fact.

I’m embarrassed to say that I ran this thru the chatjipity and it says that’s a fake video.
That really their tech is hydrogen fuel cells.
I told Chad that it was showing a dude pouring distilled water into a fuel tank and it said that it was wrong.
Chat vs Toyota. I’m going Toyota

California is still screwed due to a lack of water. You won’t be able to water your lawn or fill your car with water.

This is where water treatment stocks that can close loop water will win.

Toyota needs to put out a public notice they aren’t suicidal.
Toyota is about to be burned to the ground.

Sounds like a few people may be murdered or disappear soon

I recall some guy swearing he had developed a water powered engine many years ago. His name was Stanley Meyer:

Toyota did not hang themselves.

It's not steam. Electrolysis seperates hydrogen and oxygen, the hydrogen is the fuel. Older designs/ideas contained holding tanks for the hydrogen (dangerous).
Toyotas process uses the hydrogen as it is processed, no storage.

They can do that to individuals(and have done so), but not Toyota!
