Tom and Jerry cartoons racist

Huffington Post
quote:
"Tom & Jerry" shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. The decision to include the warning definitely ruffled some feathers, with fans on Twitter lamenting the political correctness of the situation. One fan called it "Political correctness gone mad." Another added, "So, Tom is basically a racist, sexist, chain-smoking cat. COME ON."

I was a *HUGE* T&J fan when I was a kid, and I seem to recall that sometime in the 1990's (or maybe late 1980's), they began to edit out and/or stop playing the shorts with some of the objectionable elements. I definitely remember that they over-dubbed the speech of Tom's owner with a very generic-sounding midwestern voice (which was very strange to hear).
Oh well- I guess we won't see a re-release of "Song of the South" anytime soon, either.

If you actually read the article, it's not Tom it's Mammie Two Shoes that is the issue.
Yes, they were racist at times. Not a big surprise really.

Yeah, I saw that on TV this morning. I never watched the cartoon but apparently they had a black maid in the house who was only depicted from the waist down and fat.
Now for real cartoon racism you can go back to Betty Boop.
Of course, Betty Boop was pre TV. They were only shown in movie theaters so you pay the ticket and there are fewer restrictions on that vis-a-vis T.V.

"Tom & Jerry" shorts may depict some ethnic and racial prejudices that were once commonplace in American society. Such depictions were wrong then and are wrong today.
For example, embedded cigarette and beer commercials ran when the Flintstones first aired on Friday nights. Winston and Busch were sponsors.
Probably wouldn't go over well today.

That's a good one but I think the most racist was a Betty Boop that I can't figure out how to link. She created a helicopter/bicycle. The blade was powered by an African pedaling the bike while she sat behind him.
His motivation for pedaling hard enough to make it fly was Betty holding a cane fishing pole over his head with a line attached to a banana. The banana was always just out of his reach.
And, of course, the African had a bone in his nose. That also reminds me. Back in the 50s it was still a common insult among white people. If someone acted like an uncivilized jackass we said "Hey, take the bone out of your nose."
