Good grief man, as a preacher of 40 years let me assure you Christianity is NO MERE IDEA, it is a faith in a real life Savior who gave his life to give life to us real life people who want to put off worldly things and become Christ like in nature, or to put on Christ Jesus and share our light with the world.

The United State Republic basically brought democracy to the world, before this ideal, you had in Europe "Aristocratic Rule" where Lords, Dukes and Aristocrats that lorded over "The Commoners" who did not even get to vote. So, ones a true idea/ideal the other is a real life event, not an idea/ideal, so that is what he means, to him a Christ and Christianity is a real as his parents were.
