Your anecdotal story may be true, but it is not true for the country as a whole
The median home price today is $435,000
The median home price in 1991 was $120,000. Inflation adjusted that would be $287,500
Let's do this with actual numbers, just to give you a better sense that all is not as you seem to assume:
In 1991, median home prices were ~$78K (less than the $120K you posted).
Rates for 30yr loans were ~10%. Median Income was ~$30K/yr (~$2500/m). So monthly financing ran ~$615/m or about 25% of the $2500/m
In 2021, median home prices were ~$347K (massively up, 17% Y2Y over 2020). Rates for 30yr loans were ~3.1%. Median Income was ~$72K/yr (~$6K/m) So monthly financing ran ~$1350/m or about 22% of the $6000/m
Now to be clear, that 2021 home was much, much nicer than it's 1991 comparator. Median home size in 1991 was 1400sqft vs 2530sqft in 2021. Appointments were likewise far better in the median 2021 home.
So in 2021 you could buy a far nicer home than folks in 1991 at a slightly lower monthly cost relative to salary. Now that doesn't mean folks in 1991 had it terrible. But it will hopefully be a perspective setter for you.

maybe you should consider moving from medianville to some place more affordable, right now in little rock we have more available inventory than in years.
let me give you some fatherly advice we don't do good or bad collectively in the united states we do good or bad individually but if it makes you feel better to blame the "stacked deck" for your failures you go right ahead.

Gen X here for the record.
These posts never consider that maybe the forum that responds are all adults that have been in the working world for 20+ years, started with nothing and lived with roommates, managed to fight through hardships, paid for a bunch of stuff including homes, put kids through college, funded retirement and healthcare and have seen younger and older people across multiple fields that have been successful and not been successful. Been around the super rich and the dirt poor.
But don’t listen to us…we obviously know nothing about the world.
It’s like my kids telling me I don’t understand how tough school is.

I make ~4x median, own a 2 bed as a primary and bought a 1 bed rental a few months back, my own circumstance is fine
I’m just not oblivious to the fact that if I were born even a few years later my circumstances might be significantly worse
Our nation has a serious problem where young men are falling far behind
Edit: “dont be median” is also advice that’s as retarded as don’t eat avocado. Not everyone can be above median, by definition there is always a median
If people tried to move out in mass to less urban areas it wouldn’t work. The jobs are in the urban places

Agreed.
But it’s not because their head is being held underwater by people born 70-80 years ago.

There is ALWAYS a median. Don’t matter if it’s 1960 or 2025, if you are in Dubai or Mogadishu, if you are left or right. There is ALWAYS one. And if you want to get above it.. you have to make a plan. There is no “we all can do it”. You gotta do it.

Im fine. I own my own business and have plenty enough for me and mine. Unlike boomers, I actually care about other people, even when I have enough

Half of the posters in this thread. Headed to their PC towers to type out an angry response to the OP.

Mostly agree - the massive national debt doesn’t help. But the rest of it, agreed. A lot of boomer advice doesn’t take into account the different circumstance though
End of day everyone has to play with the hand they are dealt, victim mentality won’t get anyone anywhere

For boomers the idea of caring about the future of your neighbors and their kids when you personally have made a good life is a strange concept to them.

Count me as unconvinced of the former, in consideration of the latter.

X’er here as well. I agree 100%. Our first house was tiny and needed a lot of work. Not the greatest neighborhood either, but it was all we could afford. We were happy to have it.
Hell, I still drive a 14 year old vehicle because I’m too cheap to pull money out of savings/investments to buy something new.
It’s all about your mindset.

Nowww we are finding common ground!
And this life is multiple hands. Not one hand. You may have to fold one or two hands, but if you keep playing you’ll get one that is playable. You have to just keep playing…. Not quit and bitch about someone else’s stack they got because of luck.
