That is dumb....too much potential for conflict of interest and that is a job you can't do part time

Pathetic is an understatement. The same people that have destroyed the US for over a quarter of a century are still our overloads.

Exactly. I don't mind having some grey hair in there if it didn't turn grey while they were sucking on the tit.

Old senators is only bad when the are old AND career politicians.

Young, smart people should be out in the world making money or having careers.

Politicians, in theory, should be people that have already spent a life being successful and gaining experience and wisdom.

But we have the worst of both worlds. Old fricks whos only experience is politics.

term limits is really the only answer

i would not. Public service was meant for people to give up their careers for hat single term, maybe 2 and serve the public. THEN go back to where they live and get back into their career.

Could we raise the minimum age to be in Congress? Would that help at all?

Agree. I’d really like to hear a round table of the founders and what their thoughts would be on the current political situation especially on the career politicians.

I have worked for Orrin Hatch and he is an awesome guy - BUT I know for a fact his last year in the senate he had noticeable dementia. I was visiting with him and he kept asking the same question over and over again. Notice you don't see him at any functions I'm afraid he's faded fast. Apparently Nancy is in a similar boat

What do you mean by talent? I'm sure AOC has a talent in something, just nothing I would want in someone tasked to lead the country.

There is already a conflict of interest, they shouldn't be allowed to have any income from other sources if they are in Congress, and for a period of time after. (maybe that's too restrictive, but many of these guys DO have business interests and investments all over the place).

Most cities have unpaid or part-time mayors, with a full-time city manager. These guys have big jobs for no pay, and yeah... they are almost always tied to development firms.

the old people on both sides do what they are told. elect new people and they might not follow the party lines and do crazy things like vote for the interests of their constituents and not follow what chuck and mitch want

They can have income but I believe it is bifurcated into a blind trust with third party administrators.

I disagree, if senators were too busy with real jobs then they wouldn't have time to scheme, etc.

The average incumbent has 5x the war chest of any challenger. Off the bat. That’s without campaigning/fundraising.

That’s why it’s called “serving your country”

It’s a sacrifice
