CS Lewis compared the religious rules governing his England, to the rules for calibrating a machine, so it would function best. Ie. There are many ways you could live, but some are better than others, and some are simply bad for you (and bad for society.)
In a healthy society, you encourage people, through positive pressure, to live the right way, the ways benefit both the individual and society, and you ostracize people who live in ways that are destructive and harm the community.
Societal decay occurs when you stop doing this.

I agree with your assessment. Regardless what media pushes, everyday people need to continually reject and push back against these insane people.
