I agree with the general premise. "It is better to be feared than loved".
I will add that context is important with both political parties.

Had Trump offered then warm blankets and transportation to the U.S.A. He would have secured 7,000 votes. Had he done this every month for 8 years he would have secured 672,000 votes. Had he offered each of those 4 relatives he’d have another 2.68 million votes.
