The US tax system is far more progressive than European countries

Those at the bottom in these European countries still pay significant amounts. As a result, spending increases are something they feel.
Here, it’s all “free money” to half the voters.
When the scratchers wail about billionaires paying their fair share, hit them with that little truth bomb.

I actually believe that our political efforts to get an ever increasing numbers of working people out of paying ANY income taxes has been a net negative for a number of reasons.

Yep, we largely have the most progressive tax system in the developed world. There are some that their wealthy pay a higher effective rate than ours, but their whole society pays a higher effective rate and the middle & lower classes pay significantly more as far as a % of total income taxes paid. We really struggle with how efficiently we spend our tax $'s, obviously.

And we are still 40 trillion in debt not counting unfunded liabilities.
