re: The tariffs imposed on US from Trump spreadsheet are literally just the trade ratio

someone in the administration could/should tell us the math that led to these values
They should, but the math has already been figured out. It comes from each country’s US trade surplus divided by their US exports.
Their actual tariff rates don't calculate into the equation at all, see Obtuse1's post on Switzerland.

LINK - NY Times article explaining it
LINK - WH Tariff Calculations Post
It's there clear as day. They just based it on the trade deficit because they don't want to bother doing actual work to determine what tariffs might be effective in the long run. They've drummed up idiots across America to think trade deficits are a bad thing (they're not) and somehow we have to get equal or make other countries pay more for our goods. MAGA ate that shite up because they don't like foreigners and now they're gonna feel it in their wallets.
That is unless these are all canceled next week. Then I assume the narrative amongst some of the true believers here will shift yet again.

I understand the chart just fine. It's false. The numbers posted aren't the tariffs imposed on the US, they are the trade deficit ratio.
The chart is mislabeled. Nobody in the building cares enough to produce accurate information.

No it’s not. It’s a chart showing our new tariff compared to the trade ratio.
You are technically correct, it is not insulting to your intelligence.

The Tariff thing has been the one thing that I feel like the administration is jumping the shark on. I’m not even saying they’re wrong, they could be right. But it just seems risky and like something that could easily backfire and ruin a lot of the good the administration is doing in the eyes of the public.
It seems much more likely to backfire than succeed
We basically just said F all international relations and alliances because Trump wants to play games. And we're all going to pay the price for it.

I'm sure you think this is some big gotcha and it would probably score you 20k karma and some tranny cock DMs over at Reddit.
But the tariffs are 10% flat with higher reciprocal % on many specific items.
This has been well documented.
No idea what you are going on about, apparently those cute little charts that were floating around the internet.
Good luck with the dick pics.
Eta: I see every Shitlib from the OT somehow found this thread
No comments on chopping off little boys cocks or inviting TdA over to pop little girls cherries or fire bombing Tesla dealerships or assassinating people who disagree with you?
Didn't think so.

Orange is renegotiating the world and the meltdown from all sides is wonderful to witness

I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other. I just saw the claims of 97% tariffs and thought it seemed outrageous.
Noone should accept that Switzerland charges us 62% tariffs at face value. That's absurd.
Posted on 4/2/25 at 11:05 pm to sgallo3
Yes, that’s true. Switzerland actually charges over a 1000% tariff on certain fruit and an average of 129% on dairy products.

And a 1.9% tariff for non-agricultural goods.
You should use the US Trade Representative.gov Site instead of the WTO website, it's much easier than trying to read those charts.

Switzerland, along with Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, is a member of the European Free Trade
Association (EFTA). However unlike other EFTA members, Switzerland does not participate in the
European Union (EU) single market through the European Economic Area (EEA) accord. According to
the WTO, Switzerland"s simple average applied tariff is 27.2 percent for agricultural goods and 1.9
percent for non-agricultural goods

No, Cambodia doesn’t have a 10% tariff. Try again. It imposes a range of tariffs based on the type of goods. Trump’s chart is also considering the currency manipulation which is an important part of the whole picture.
It is 11.7% average applied rate. Close enough to count as ~10%

Tariffs
Cambodia is one of the few least-developed WTO Members that took on binding tariff commitments on all
products in its tariff schedule. Its overall simple average bound tariff rate is 20.1 percent, while the
average applied rate is 11.7 percent. Its highest tariff rate of 35 percent is imposed on several semiprocessed goods, including processed meat and dairy, processed vegetables and fruits, beverages and
tobacco, footwear, and motor vehicles.

A weaker America?
How will making chips and medicine in the actual USA weaken America?
In the past 50 years, lower and middle class Americans have gotten much poorer. How will bringing jobs back to America, weaken America?
Posted on 4/2/25 at 11:18 pm to sgallo3
You can’t fault Trump for a misleading chart while also using the average applied rate.
And for the record I don’t disagree with you that discussing tariffs as some monolithic rate is misleading.
