I guess some are unfamiliar with Political Shifts. It is wrong to look at this from the name of political party, instead look at it from the philosophical side.
From the Civil War up to the depression, the Republican Party was the Liberal party. You started to see a shift begin with northern Democrats and Republicans both start to take on the Progressive mantle until almost combining. While southern counterparts begin to shift to a more conservative nature eventually culminating in Southern Strategy resulting in today's conservative Republican party
