The "Original Nightstalker" who raped countless women, killed a number of them (and their husbands) has been caught. He terrorized California in the late 70's by breaking into women's houses and raping (and/or killing) them. Sometimes he would kill the man of the house as well.

It's amazing this guy was caught now after the recent renewed interest in the case (#1 NYT book, numerous recent documentaries, etc.). I have to wonder if he did what BTK Killer did and got arrogant and began talking or taunting police. (BTK was only caught decades later after he began taunting police).

Seems this guy is a former Cop in that area. He is 72 years old now.

Is this the golden state killer that would call his victims later and scare the shite out of them? I listened to a podcast that had the recordings and it was some seriously freaky stuff.

One good thing about our current surveillance state we live in is that it's hard for guys like this to get away with these crimes like they did back in the day (Bundy, BTK, Nightstalker, etc.). It's nearly impossible to pull off a string of 30 rapes/murders today and remain anonymous.

Yep, same guy. He is called Original Nightstalker (not to be confused with the later Nightstalker, Ramirez). He is also called "East Area Rapist" as well as "Golden State Killer."

All the same guy. They connected the rapes in the north (East Area Rapist) to the murders in the south (Nightstalker). For years they didn't know it was the same guy, but DNA confirmed it a number of years ago.

I know this is not likely, but I'm curious if his DNA could be tied to some of the scenes due to innocent LE interaction with these people, like interviewing them, and thus he's been wrongly identified.

No. They said he was fired from the PD for stealing stuff (dog repellent).

I am not sure how they zeroed in on him because even though they had DNA, they had no one to match it to (no one in the criminal database). The Cop said at the presser that they had been following him for a while recently and ended up obtaining his DNA by pillaging through his trash (a common tactic they use when they can't get a warrant).

The question is what made them suspicious of him in the first place. I don't know if he was an original suspect back in the day (I doubt it).

He's being tried in Ventura County, where supposedly the strongest and best preserved DNA evidence is. He was never a LEO in Ventura County.

Synchronicity. During brief rainstorm was flipping through channels. Came across ID Discovery show on Golden State Killer: He is Still Out There, first aired March 2018. Not familiar so Googled. First response was a story posted 10 min earlier on his capture. Then got alert on phone of press conference from Sacremento. Odd.

I finished listening to a 5 part Casefile podcast on this guy last week. I was convinced that they were never going to catch him.

This dude was truly evil.

He was living with his kid and his grandchild. I wonder if his kid had any inkling he was a notorious serial killer.

I suspect cops were led to him by a tip (they will not confirm that). The recent media coverage of his case (books, documentaries, etc.) might have led the killer to make a comment that made a family member suspicious enough to go to police. If true, this tip must have been rock solid because cops get tons of fake tips all the time in relation to high profile cases like this.

I don't want to sound racist, but I knew this guy would turn out to be white. 99% of the time when you've got a sicko, freako, whacko doing the sick, humiliating, degrading stuff this guy was doing to his vics, he's going to be a white dude.

I hope they torture this prick for a few months before they execute him.

It was regular civilians who caught Richard Ramirez and not cops.

After failing to meet his brother, he returned to Los Angeles early on the morning of August 31. He walked past officers, who were staking out the bus terminal in hopes of catching the killer should he attempt to flee on an outbound bus, to a convenience store in East Los Angeles.

After noticing a group of elderly Mexican women fearfully identifying him as "El Matador" (or "The Killer"), Ramirez saw his face on the covers on the newspaper rack and fled the store in a panic.

After running across the Santa Ana Freeway, he attempted to carjack a woman but was chased away by bystanders, who pursued him. After hopping over several fences and attempting two more carjackings, he was eventually subdued by a group of residents, one of whom had struck him over the head with a metal bar in the pursuit.

The group held him down, relentlessly beating him until police arrived and took Ramirez into custody.
