Can someone explain this to me? The guy is a certifiable nut job, sued for something like a billion over that Florida school shooting, and now major news outlets are covering the bid by The Onion to take his site and turn it into a parody account.

NPR

Perhaps I am dense, but why does anyone care what this guy has to say? And if the left thinks he's some kind of clown, why spend resources on buying him out?

Tell me you know nothing about Alex Jones without telling me you know nothing about Alex Jones.

When you talk about an elementary school shooting being a hoax, where parents lost their children, I think people understandably don’t like that.

If he was everything you said he was or think he is, then the left wouldn't care about him.

They only go after what they perceive as a threat. If Jones was spewing lies then they wouldn't give 2 shits about him.

He fricked up majorly on calling Sandy Hook a hoax. If he hadn’t done that, people would be more open to listening to him

Alex Jones, who spread lies about the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary that killed 26 first-graders and staffers, has dropped efforts to declare bankruptcy and agreed to liquidate his assets in order to finally start paying the nearly $1.5 billion in damages he owes the victims' families.

The relatives of the Sandy Hook victims won their defamation suits against Jones in 2021. But they have yet to see a penny since Jones and his media company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2022.

Alex Jones files for bankruptcy following $1 billion Sandy Hook verdicts
Chris Mattei, an attorney representing some of the Sandy Hook families, said Jones is on the "brink of justice" and the victims' relatives are determined to keep him accountable.

The point the user was making is that Sandy Hook isn't in Florida.

The Onion just put in another bid (after initially winning the original bid before the judge dropped them) to take over InfoWars to make it a parody site

My bad. Frick me. The question is still on the table for the pedantic geniuses of the Poli board.

Yes, Sandy Hook is not in Florida, bro.

I'm an old dude and I've listened to Jones since his start. Is he over the top and crazy, yep. Is what he says true, yep, about 95% of the time.

If you get past the crazy and dissect what he says he's more knowledgeable with what's going on in the world than most.

I’m starting to get exited about the new InfoWars. Yesterday Tim Heidecker was announced as the new Creative Director of Infowars should the deal go through.

I think might be helpful to see Alex Jones as not a nutjob but a guy who is playing a character (in fact, he testified to this effect in court in his custody case).

Also, I think 2 different questions are getting mixed together:

Is Alex Jones credible?
Does what he says have real-world effects?

Those aren’t the same thing. Someone can be wildly wrong and not seem credible to some and still cause harm if enough other people act on it. That’s why the Sandy Hook stuff mattered - families were harassed for years including by people he influenced over something that wasn’t true.

So I don’t think the attention is about taking him seriously as a thinker so much as dealing with the downstream effects.

Why does anyone listen to any talking head? One thing about Alex Jones that people who hate him don't want to admit, and it's not like I'm some fanboy who watches him regularly or anything, but he has been right about much more than he has been wrong about. He was calling out the Deep State and Epstein etc etc etc WAY before it was cool.
