The cynical side of me says they know this full well, but they are more interested in inflaming their base than they are winning converts. Profitable, but cancerous.
For people in politics and media, I certainly think this is the case, though obviously there are some true believers. And it's bad, because it generates more polarization and less real dialog.

Did she, though? I sort of think she is just that clueless.
She seems like an intelligent woman, but Piers Morgan rose to his position by doing exactly what he does and I have no doubt she's following that model because she knows it will garner attention and make for good, combative tv. Most of her counter arguments were beneath her real intelligence and she knew it. The only response where I think she was genuine was when he stumped her on free speech. I think real free speech is a foreign concept that people in the UK don't really get exposed to.

He handles interviews a lot like Milton Friedman did.

The identity politics do provide for some hilarious anecdotes though.
I remember when that Reality Winner girl was charged with leaking classified documents.
At some point, Rosie O'Donnell tweeted support for her along with some hashtag like #womenunite or some shite like that.
I was like "what in the ever-living frick does enforcing national security procedures have to do with feminism?"

Their demeanors couldn't be more opposite. He was cool, calm, collected, laid back in his chair while she was leaning forward, aggressive, and combative. She clearly had an agenda but it's nothing he's never experienced before. At the conclusion of the interview he's laughing pretty hard too. Probably because he knew what he just did to her on tv.

Of course, I'm sure he has/had to put up with a deluge of accusations of being condescending and "mansplaining."

She was being the typical dishonest "journalist" that's trying to spew contemporary social trends as if they're based on some sort of science. Hell, he answered her 5 different times on the wage gap issue and it was almost as if she wasn't even listening to what he was actually saying. She simply chose to cherry pick phrases and attempt to turn it back on him. I would be embarrassed if I got eviscerated like that on national tv.

Bumping so more people can see. This is the conversation I've been having with my children about the need to defend Free Speech with more Free Speech.
